What PVD actually is
PVD stands for physical vapor deposition. Rather than depositing metal from a solution electrolytically, the coating material is vaporized in a vacuum chamber and condenses onto the item. The resulting layer is typically harder and better bonded than conventional electroplating of the same thickness.
Note what that sentence does not say. PVD describes how the coating got there, not how much gold is in it. A PVD gold coating is still a coating, usually in the same order of thickness as electroplating, and often it is not pure gold at all but a gold-colored compound such as titanium nitride tuned to a gold hue.

Where PVD genuinely wins
Scratch resistance. This is real and it matters. A PVD coating resists the surface scuffing that dulls soft gold, so a PVD piece often looks better at six months than a gold-filled one, even though the gold-filled one will look better at six years.
The base metal. PVD is generally applied over stainless steel because the process suits it. That gives you a failure mode nothing else in budget jewelry has: when the coating thins, the piece is a steel chain. It will not corrode, it will not turn your skin green, and it is still perfectly wearable. Compare that with worn plating over brass, where the ending is a green neck.
Water. Steel-based PVD pieces are the ones marketed as “waterproof jewelry”, and for the base metal that claim is fair. The coating still wears; the chain underneath does not care.
Where the marketing overreaches
“PVD gold”, “waterproof gold” and “tarnish-free 18K” are frequently presented as though they were equivalent to, or better than, gold-filled. They are not. They describe a coating process; gold-filled describes a quantity of gold. A hard coating that is still measured in microns cannot outlast a bonded layer that is measured in percent of total weight.
The FTC guides also address durability language directly - claims like “corrosion proof” and “rust resistant” are governed rather than free-form. When a listing reaches for an absolute, treat it as a claim rather than a specification.
Which to buy
For anything you want to keep for years in gold color, gold-filled. For a swim-in, shower-in, gym-in piece where you accept replacing it every couple of years, PVD over stainless is excellent value and genuinely the better-engineered object for that job. For a bracelet, the steel base is worth more than the extra gold, because wrists destroy every coating regardless.

Common questions
Is PVD gold plating real gold?
Sometimes. PVD can deposit real gold, but it is also used for gold-colored compounds like titanium nitride that contain no gold at all. The process name tells you nothing about the material - you need the listing to say which, and many do not.
Does PVD coating wear off?
Yes. It is harder than electroplating and so it resists scratching better, but it is still a surface layer and abrasion still removes it - typically at the clasp and other friction points within one to three years of daily wear.
Is waterproof jewelry actually waterproof?
The stainless steel base is genuinely unaffected by water. The coating on top is not made immortal by being wet-safe, and soap plus water accelerates its wear. The claim is true about the metal and misleading about the finish.
