Anniversary Gifts by Year
The full chart, and the part nobody prints alongside it: several of these stones are too soft for a ring, and giving one without saying so sets the recipient up.

The short answer
The traditional and modern lists both assign a material or gemstone to each year. Below is the full chart with Mohs hardness for every stone - because several traditional anniversary stones are soft, and a soft stone in a daily ring is a short and disappointing gift.

The part nobody prints
Read down the hardness column. The stone years that give you something you can put on a hand and forget about are 5, 10, 15, 40, 45, 55 and 60 - sapphire, ruby, diamond, alexandrite and topaz.
Years 3, 9, 11, 14, 20, 30 and 35 assign stones that are soft, porous or brittle. A pearl or opal ring given to someone who wears rings daily will be visibly worn within a year, and they will feel bad about it.
The fix is not to change the stone - it is to change the piece. Pearl earrings, an opal pendant, a turquoise brooch. The same stone, in a placement that does not destroy it.
Two materials that need naming
The traditional list includes ivory at year 14 and coral at year 35. Both should be substituted. The ivory trade is restricted and, as a gift, indefensible; most coral used in jewelry comes from slow-growing reef species under pressure. Modern lists already substitute gold and jade respectively, which is the right call.
Buying for a gold or silver year
Years 1 and 50 are gold; year 25 is silver. The practical question is whether to buy solid or a coated equivalent.
- Year 1 is usually a modest budget, and gold-filled is the honest answer - a decade of real gold color rather than a year of plating.
- Year 25 is silver: buy solid sterling, not silver-plate. The price gap is small and the durability gap is permanent.
- Year 50 is the one to buy solid gold for, if the budget allows. It is the anniversary where permanence is the point.
Engraving
A date engraved into solid metal lasts as long as the piece. A date engraved into plating wears through at the letters first, because engraving cuts into the thinnest part of the coating.
So for anything engraved, sterling or solid gold - never plated. It is the one place where the material choice is not about appearance at all.
Every pick in detail
What each one is actually made of, how long it realistically lasts in that material, who it is for and who should skip it.

1 · Best pearl anniversary
JORA Classic Freshwater Cultured Pearl Necklace, 7.5-8mm
A real pearl strand at $42. Budget for restringing and it will outlive most of what is on this site.
- What it is
- 7.5-8mm white freshwater cultured pearls, princess length.
- Realistic lifespan
- The pearls themselves last decades with care. The silk or thread they are strung on does not - restringing every few years of regular wear is normal maintenance, not a defect.
- 7.5-8mm
- cultured freshwater
- princess length
What works
- Genuine cultured pearls, sized in the classic range
- Princess length suits almost every neckline
What does not
- Thread wears and needs replacing - a maintenance cost nobody warns you about
- Freshwater pearls are less perfectly round than saltwater akoya, at a fraction of the price
Skip it if: you want zero maintenance. A strand is a piece you look after; a stainless chain is a piece you forget about.

Best for a first real pearl necklace, or a wedding-party piece. Score 7.1/10 from published specifications.

2 · Most durable stone year
Jewelili Sterling Silver Created White Sapphire Halo Ring
The overlooked middle option: a genuinely hard stone at CZ money. It sparkles less than CZ on day one and far more than CZ on year five.
- What it is
- Lab-created white sapphire in 925 sterling silver. Created sapphire is chemically identical to mined sapphire - corundum - and is not a simulant.
- Realistic lifespan
- Sapphire is Mohs 9, harder than CZ and just below moissanite. It resists scratching well but has lower brilliance, so it reads softer and greyer than a diamond rather than cloudy.
- Mohs 9
- created sapphire
- 925 sterling
What works
- Real corundum, chemically identical to mined sapphire
- Mohs 9 means it stays clean-surfaced far longer than CZ
- Under $13, which is remarkable for a stone this hard
What does not
- Lower refractive index than CZ or moissanite - noticeably less fire
- White sapphire can read slightly gray next to a diamond
Skip it if: you want maximum sparkle. Sapphire is the durable, understated option; moissanite is the bright one.
Best for someone who prefers a soft, glassy look to a hard glitter. Score 8.3/10 from published specifications.

3 · Best diamond year
Belacqua 1/2 Carat Lab-Grown Diamond Stud Earrings, 14K Yellow Gold
The first item here where nothing is a coating and nothing clouds. That is what the price is buying.
- What it is
- Lab-grown diamonds set in solid 14K yellow gold. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds - same carbon, same crystal structure, same Mohs 10 hardness. The gold is solid, not plated or filled.
- Realistic lifespan
- Effectively permanent. Mohs 10 stones in solid 14K gold is the only combination on this site with no wear-limited component at all.
- 0.5ct total
- Mohs 10
- solid 14K gold
What works
- Solid gold settings - no plating to wear off, ever
- Real diamonds at a fraction of mined-diamond pricing
- Nothing on this product has a countdown attached to it
What does not
- Lab-grown diamond resale is thin and prices have fallen steadily
- The most expensive earrings on the site by a wide margin
Skip it if: you are buying for resale or as a store of value. Lab-grown prices have been falling; buy these to wear for thirty years, which they will.

Best for buying earrings once. Score 9.2/10 from published specifications.

4 · Best gold-year value
Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace
The clearest gold-filled starter chain in the set - the listing says gold-filled in those words, which is most of what you are paying for.
- What it is
- 14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.
- Realistic lifespan
- Gold-filled worn daily typically holds its color 10-30 years. Assumes daily wear, removal for swimming, and no repeated chemical contact.
- 1.5mm cable
- 14K gold-filled
- 18in
What works
- Unambiguous gold-filled labeling - the material claim is checkable
- Cable link is the most repairable chain style if a link ever opens
- Gold-filled tolerates sweat and daily wear in a way plating does not
What does not
- Costs roughly twice a plated chain of the same look
- 1.5mm is dainty; it will not read as a statement chain
Skip it if: you change chains with the season. For a one-season trend piece a $12 plated chain is the rational purchase and we would not talk you out of it.

Best for a first chain you want to still own in ten years. Score 8.8/10 from published specifications.

5 · Best engraved gift
RESVIVI Sterling Silver 3D Engraved Personalized Bar Necklace
Engraving on solid sterling rather than a plated surface. Engraved plating wears through at the letters first; this does not have that problem.
- What it is
- 925 sterling silver engraved bar pendant, custom text.
- Realistic lifespan
- Indefinite as a material. Engraving on sterling softens over decades of polishing - polish gently and it stays crisp far longer.
- 925 sterling
- 3D engraving
- custom text
What works
- Engraving into solid metal, not through a coating
- Bar shape is far sturdier than cut-out script
What does not
- Aggressive polishing softens engraving over time
- Custom items are typically non-returnable
Skip it if: you might get the spelling wrong. Check it twice; this is not coming back.

Best for a dated or named piece meant to last. Score 8.3/10 from published specifications.

6 · Best value stone
Moissanite Stud Earrings, 2.0ct D Color Equivalent, GRA Certified
The stone that solves the CZ problem. Hard enough to stay bright, priced far below a diamond, and honest about being moissanite.
- What it is
- Moissanite (silicon carbide) in 925 sterling silver with an 18K white gold plated finish, sold with a GRA report. Moissanite is its own mineral, not a diamond simulant pretending otherwise.
- Realistic lifespan
- Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale against diamond's 10 and CZ's 8-8.5. In practice it holds its polish for decades where CZ clouds in a few years. The plated finish on the setting is the part that wears first.
- 2.0ct
- Mohs 9.25
- GRA report
What works
- Genuinely durable - moissanite does not go cloudy the way CZ does
- Higher refractive index than diamond, so it throws more colored fire
- Sold with a GRA report, which at least documents what the stone is
What does not
- The extra fire reads as 'not a diamond' to anyone who looks closely - some people want that, some do not
- GRA reports are not GIA reports; treat them as identification, not valuation
- The setting's white finish is plated and will wear
Skip it if: you want something with resale value. Moissanite's secondary market is thin. Buy it to wear, not to sell.

Best for someone who wants stones that still sparkle in ten years. Score 8.4/10 from published specifications.
Common questions
What is the traditional 5th anniversary gift?
Wood traditionally, sapphire on the modern gemstone list. Sapphire is Mohs 9 and one of the most durable anniversary stones, so a sapphire ring for year five is a genuinely good idea.
Which anniversary stones are safe for a ring?
Sapphire (5, 45), diamond (10, 60), ruby (15, 40), topaz (4) and alexandrite (55) are all hard enough for daily wear. Pearl, opal, turquoise and lapis are not, and emerald is brittle despite a respectable hardness number.
Is there an official anniversary gift list?
No single authority sets one, which is why traditional and modern lists differ and why some years have several accepted materials. Treat them as conventions rather than rules.
What should I get instead of ivory or coral?
Gold for year 14 and jade for year 35, which is what the modern lists already substitute. The ivory trade is restricted, and most jewelry coral comes from slow-growing reef species under pressure.
