Gold Filled vs Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated

The three terms, defined by the regulation rather than by marketing

The US Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) set out what each of these words may legally describe. These are not industry conventions or opinions - they are published thresholds, and you can read them yourself at the links in the sources block at the bottom of this page.

Why the gap is so much bigger than it looks

A minimum-spec gold plating is 0.175 microns. Vermeil’s minimum is 2.5 microns - about 14 times thicker. Gold-filled is not measured in microns at all but as a fraction of total weight, and in practice a gold-filled chain carries a layer on the order of a hundred times a minimum plating.

That is why these three products wear out on completely different timescales while looking identical in a photograph. The visible difference on day one is essentially zero. The difference at month eighteen is the whole purchase.

The arithmetic, with the assumptions stated

Here is the wear model we use across this site, stated in full so you can disagree with it. Gold coatings wear by abrasion at contact points, so the loss rate depends on where the piece sits and what it rubs against. For a chain worn daily, the friction points are the back of the neck and the clasp; for a ring, the whole band; for earrings, almost nothing.

Assuming daily wear, no removal for showering, no perfume contact and no swimming, minimum-spec plating on a chain typically shows visible thinning at the clasp within 6-18 months. A 2.5-micron layer - vermeil or heavy electroplate - runs roughly 1-3 years on the same model. Gold-filled, carrying two orders of magnitude more gold, runs 10-30 years and often outlives the wearer’s interest in the style.

Those are ranges, deliberately. A point estimate here would be false precision: skin chemistry, humidity, how often you shower in it and whether you take it off at the gym all move the number by months. A range with the assumptions written down is worth more than a confident single figure.

Cost per year of wear - the number nobody prints

Take a plated chain at roughly $20 lasting a year, against a gold-filled chain at roughly $40 lasting a decade. The plated chain costs about $20 per year of wear. The gold-filled chain costs about $4. The cheaper item is five times more expensive to own.

This is not an argument that plated jewelry is bad. If you want a chain for one season because the style will not survive the year either, $20 for a year is a perfectly rational trade and we would not talk you out of it. It is an argument that the two products are answering different questions, and the listing will not tell you which one you are answering.

What “18K gold plated” actually means

This is the phrase that causes the most confusion, and it is the reason our buyer arrives here. In “18K gold plated”, the 18K describes the coating, not the piece. The item underneath is usually brass. An 18K gold plated chain is not 75% gold; it is a base-metal chain with a microscopically thin film of 18-karat alloy on it.

The regulation permits this, provided the karat designation immediately precedes the word “plated” with equal conspicuousness. It is legal and it is systematically misread. Whenever you see a karat number, ask what noun it is attached to: gold, or gold plating.

Vermeil is the one with a base-metal guarantee

Vermeil is the only one of the three where the rule tells you what is underneath: it must be sterling silver. Plating and gold-filled can sit on any base metal, and the seller is not required to name it. That matters for two reasons - a sterling base is worth something when the gold goes, and it is far less likely to cause a skin reaction than an unnamed alloy.

The catch is that many listings selling gold over sterling never publish a micron figure, which means you cannot confirm they clear the 2.5-micron vermeil threshold. On this site, gold over sterling without a published thickness is called “gold-plated sterling”, not vermeil. It is a smaller claim, and it is the one the listing supports.

What to do with this at the checkout

Search the listing text for one of four things, in this order: “gold-filled” (best - a legally defined weight threshold), “vermeil” with a micron figure (good, and it guarantees sterling underneath), a named base metal like 316L steel (acceptable - at least you know what you are left with), or nothing at all (assume minimum-spec plating over brass and price it as a one-year product).

If you want the decision made for you: for a chain you will wear every day, buy gold-filled. For earrings, plating survives far better than you would expect because earrings barely abrade, so a plated hoop is a reasonable buy. For a bracelet, buy gold-filled or steel - wrists destroy coatings faster than anywhere else on the body.
