Where the nickel is and what it does

Austenitic stainless steels - the 300 series, which covers essentially all stainless jewelry - use nickel to stabilize their crystal structure. It is what gives them their corrosion resistance and their workability. Removing it changes the metal into something else.

Crucially, that nickel is bound in the alloy, not sitting on the surface. It is not free to transfer the way it is in cheap plated jewelry with a nickel layer. That is why the great majority of people who react to costume earrings wear stainless steel without any problem at all.

Bound is not the same as absent

Stainless steel does release nickel, at a low rate that depends on the alloy, the finish and the conditions - sweat and chloride exposure both increase it. For most people the rate is far below what triggers a reaction. For someone with a well-established nickel allergy, particularly on a piercing that sits in contact all day, low is not zero.

This is the honest nuance that gets lost in both directions: steel is not dangerous, and it is also not the answer for a diagnosed allergy.

The word to distrust

“Hypoallergenic” has no legal definition in the United States. It can be printed on nickel-bearing steel without any consequence, and it routinely is. So can “nickel-free” in practice, since there is no certification behind it either.

The claims that mean something are the ones that name a standard: ASTM F136, G23 titanium, implant grade, niobium. Everything else is a marketing adjective.

Is 316L stainless steel nickel free?

No. 316L contains nickel as an essential alloying element. It is bound in the alloy and releases very little, which is why most people tolerate it, but it is not nickel-free and should not be sold as such.

Can I wear stainless steel if I have a nickel allergy?

Many people with mild sensitivity can, particularly with 316L. With a diagnosed allergy it is a gamble, and there is no reason to take it when implant-grade titanium costs about the same and contains no nickel by specification.

What jewelry is genuinely nickel free?
