The percentages, and what they leave room for
Karat is a fraction out of 24. 24K is pure gold. 18K is 18/24, or 75% gold. 14K is 14/24, or 58.3%. 10K is 41.7% and is the lowest that may legally be described as gold in the US.
The remaining percentage is alloy - copper, silver, zinc, palladium, sometimes nickel - and that alloy does two things. It hardens the metal, and it sets the color. Rose gold is high in copper; white gold is alloyed with white metals and usually rhodium-plated on top.

The trade nobody explains
Pure gold is soft enough to mark with a fingernail. Every point of purity you add makes the metal richer in color and more chemically inert - and also softer. So the “better” gold is the one that scratches more easily and whose prongs bend more readily.
That is why 18K engagement rings develop visible surface wear faster than 14K ones, and why many jewelers quietly recommend 14K for a ring someone will wear every day for decades. Nobody selling 18K leads with this.
Where 18K genuinely wins
- Color. 18K yellow gold is visibly warmer and deeper. Side by side, the difference is real, not marketing.
- Skin reactions. Less alloy means less of whatever you might be reacting to - nickel in particular. For someone whose skin is difficult, going up in karat genuinely helps.
- Low-wear pieces. Earrings and pendants barely abrade, so 18K’s softness costs you nothing there and you get the better color for free.
Where 14K wins
- Rings. Hands are brutal. Harder alloy holds its shape, holds prongs and holds a polish.
- Chains worn daily. Links rub against each other constantly. Harder metal wears more slowly at the link contact points.
- Budget. Roughly 22% less gold at the same weight is a meaningful price difference for a difference in color most people will not notice unless the two are touching.

Common questions
Is 18K gold worth the extra money?
For earrings, pendants and anyone with reactive skin, yes - you get better color and less alloy for the premium. For a daily ring, often not: you pay more for a softer metal that will show wear sooner.
Does 14K gold tarnish?
The gold does not, but the alloy can. At 58.3% gold there is enough copper and silver in the mix that some people see slight discoloration where the piece sits against skin, especially in humid conditions. It cleans off and it is a surface effect, not damage.
Is 10K gold real gold?
Yes, and it is the legal minimum in the US at 41.7%. It is the hardest and cheapest option, and it carries the most alloy - so it is the most likely of the solid golds to cause a reaction in someone sensitive to nickel.
Which karat is best for sensitive skin?
Higher is better, because there is less alloy to react to. 18K is a meaningful improvement over 14K for most people. If the reaction is severe, gold may not be the answer at all - implant-grade titanium removes the variable entirely.
