What Does 925 Mean on Jewelry?
It means 925 parts per thousand pure silver. It is one of the few genuinely checkable claims in jewelry - and it still does not tell you everything.

The short answer
925 means 925 parts per thousand pure silver - 92.5% - with the remainder usually copper. It is the legal threshold for calling something sterling silver in the US, and it describes the whole piece, not a coating.

The standard
16 CFR 23.5 makes it unfair or deceptive to use “solid silver”, “Sterling Silver”, “Sterling” or “Ster.” unless the product is at least 925/1000ths pure silver. Separately, “coin” or “coin silver” requires at least 900/1000ths.
So 925 is not a brand, a style or a marketing shorthand. It is a purity figure with a regulation behind it, which puts it in a small club alongside “gold-filled” and a named ASTM grade.
Why not pure silver?
Fine silver - 999 - is too soft for most jewelry. It deforms with ordinary handling, clasps distort and prongs will not hold. The 7.5% of other metal, usually copper, is what makes silver into a workable jewelry material.
That copper is also why sterling tarnishes: the reaction with airborne sulfur compounds involves the copper more than the silver. Purer silver tarnishes less and bends more. 925 is the compromise the industry settled on centuries ago and it has held up.

What the stamp does not guarantee
Three things worth knowing, because 925 is often read as covering more than it does:
- It says nothing about the stones. A 925 setting can hold cubic zirconia, glass or a created stone. The mark is about the metal only.
- It says nothing about a plating on top. Gold vermeil is 925 underneath; so is rhodium-plated sterling. A 925 stamp on a gold-colored piece means gold over sterling, not solid gold.
- A stamp can be counterfeited. It is a marking, not a proof. On a marketplace listing it is evidence, not certainty - which is why the acid test and the magnet test are worth knowing.
Two checks you can do at home
The magnet test. Silver is not magnetic. If a strong magnet grabs the piece firmly, it is not solid silver. This rules things out rather than confirming them - plenty of non-silver metals are also non-magnetic.
The tarnish test. Real sterling tarnishes over time. A silver-colored piece that has never tarnished in years of wear is more likely to be steel or rhodium plated. Counter-intuitively, tarnishing is evidence in sterling’s favor.

Is 925 silver real silver?
Yes - 92.5% pure silver throughout, not a coating. The remaining 7.5% is alloy, usually copper, added because pure silver is too soft to hold a shape.
Does 925 silver tarnish?
Yes, and that is normal. The copper in the alloy reacts with airborne sulfur compounds. It is a surface effect, fully reversible with a treated cloth, and storing the piece in a closed box with an anti-tarnish strip prevents most of it.
Can 925 silver turn skin green?
Occasionally, in humid conditions or with certain skin chemistry - the copper in the alloy is the culprit, the same as in brass. It is much less common than with plated brass jewelry, and it washes off.
Is 925 silver worth anything?
Yes. Unlike plating or gold-filled, sterling has real scrap value quoted against the silver spot price. It is modest per piece, but it is genuine, which is more than most budget jewelry can say.
