What tarnish actually is
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and about 7.5% other metal, usually copper. Tarnish is a surface reaction between that alloy and airborne sulfur compounds, forming a dark film.
Two things follow from that. First, tarnish is surface only - the metal underneath is unchanged, so it is not damage. Second, it is caused by air exposure, which means storage is the lever, not cleaning technique.
Why less cleaning is better
Every polishing method works by mild abrasion: it takes the tarnish film off, and a microscopic layer of silver with it. That is fine occasionally. Done frequently over years it softens hallmarks, blurs engraving and thins delicate detail.
So the sensible strategy is inverted from what most guides suggest. Rather than getting good at polishing, get good at storage - and then polish twice a year instead of twice a month.

What not to do
- Do not use toothpaste. It is a widely repeated tip and it is abrasive in an uncontrolled way - it scratches silver and the scratches are permanent.
- Do not use the foil-and-baking-soda trick on anything you value. It works by an electrochemical reaction that strips tarnish aggressively, including from oxidized detail that was meant to be dark. It also should never come near stones or pearls.
- Do not polish silver-plated pieces. Polishing removes the plating. This is the most common way plated jewelry gets destroyed by its owner.
- Do not wash a treated polishing cloth. The compound is what makes it work; washing turns it into a rag.

Wipe the piece with a soft dry cloth after wearing it. Sweat and skin oil are mildly acidic and accelerate the reaction, and removing them takes ten seconds.
