The constructions, and how to tell which you are looking at

Men’s chains are sold almost entirely on width and style, and almost never on construction - which is the opposite of how they should be sold, because construction is what decides whether the chain looks the same in five years.

The gold-filled threshold is a real legal definition - the FTC Jewelry Guides require the gold layer to be at least one-twentieth of the item’s total metal weight before anything may be called gold-filled. The arithmetic that decides this for most people

A gold-filled rope costs many times what a plated chain costs, and buyers reasonably balk at that. The number worth running is cost per year of wear rather than cost.

A plated chain that looks right for eighteen months and is replaced repeatedly, against a gold-filled chain that holds its color for twenty years and is replaced never: the annual numbers land far closer together than the sticker prices suggest, and only one of them leaves you owning a chain the whole time. The honest exception: if you like changing chains, plating is the correct purchase and nobody should talk you out of it. Buy plating over steel rather than over brass and the failure costs you nothing.

Width, and what each one actually reads as

• 2-3mm: visible only close up. Sits under a collar. The width most people actually wear daily.
• 3.5-5mm: clearly a chain from across a room, still unremarkable. The broadest-appeal band.
• 6mm and up: a statement, and heavy. A 6mm chain in solid gold contains enough metal to cost several thousand dollars - which is exactly why almost every wide “gold” chain online is coated. The arithmetic gives it away before the listing does.

That last point is the most useful check on the page. Gold is benchmarked twice a day in dollars per troy ounce. A wide chain contains a lot of metal. If the price does not reflect the metal weight, the metal is not what the listing implies.

Link styles, briefly

Cuban is flat-lying, dense and the default for a reason - it is the hardest style to make look cheap. Rope is the strongest per gram but catches on fabric and abrades against itself. Figaro alternates link lengths and reads as more decorative. Box and herringbone are flatter and more formal, and herringbone kinks permanently if it is bent - in any material, at any price.

Clasps are what actually break

On a heavy chain the clasp carries all the load and is usually the cheapest component. Lobster clasps outlast spring rings by a wide margin. A box clasp with a safety catch is better still. If a chain is going to be worn daily and never taken off, the clasp is worth more attention than the finish.
