The standard lengths and their trade names
Necklace lengths have conventional names in the US jewelry trade, and listings use them without explaining them. They are measured as the total length of the chain including the clasp, not as the drop from the neck.

Why 18 inches is the default, and when it is wrong
18 inches lands at the collarbone on most adults, which is the most flattering and least committal place for a chain to sit. That is why nearly every necklace is sold at that length and why it is the safe gift choice.
It is the wrong answer in three situations, all of them predictable:
- A pendant. A pendant hangs below the chain, so an 18-inch chain puts the pendant itself below the collarbone - often right at the neckline of a top, where it catches. For a pendant, 20 inches usually reads better.
- Layering. Layered chains need at least two inches between them or they tangle and sit as one. 16, 18 and 20 works; three chains all at 18 does not.
- A significantly taller or broader wearer. Length is measured on the chain, not the body. The same 18 inches sits higher on a larger frame. For men, 20 inches is generally the equivalent of 18 on a smaller frame, and 22-24 inches is the standard pendant length.
Necklines, briefly
The rule that actually works: the chain should not compete with the neckline. A v-neck takes a pendant that sits inside the V - usually 18-20 inches. A crew or boat neck wants a chain either above the fabric line (16 inches) or clearly below it (22 inches and over); anything landing exactly on the neckline looks accidental. A strapless or sweetheart neckline suits a shorter chain, because there is nothing to break up the space.
How to measure without asking
Two reliable approaches when you are buying a necklace as a gift:
- Measure a chain they already wear. Lay it flat and measure end to end including the clasp. This is exact and almost nobody notices a necklace missing from a dish for ten minutes.
- Use a piece of string. Hold it around your own neck at the length you want and measure it. Add an inch or two if the recipient is noticeably taller or broader than you.
And the escape hatch that removes the problem entirely: an extender chain. A two-inch extender turns an 18-inch necklace into a 20-inch one, costs almost nothing, and is the single most useful thing to include with a gifted chain.
The length nobody thinks about: the clasp
A chain is only as good as its clasp, and a gift chain is often opened by someone who will be fastening it behind their own neck, one-handed, without a mirror. Lobster clasps are far easier than spring rings for that, and magnetic clasps are easiest of all - though magnetic clasps also come apart under load, so they are the wrong choice for anything you would mind losing.
