Best Necklaces Under $100

Chains are where material choice matters most, because the back of your neck is a friction point that never stops working.

By Stephen V.Published How we pick

#ad — we earn a commission on qualifying Amazon purchases at no extra cost to you. How this site is funded. Prices are live and shown as of September 7, 2026.

The short answer

Under $100, buy gold-filled if you want gold color (10-30 years), sterling if you want silver with resale value, or stainless steel if you want zero maintenance. A plated chain at this budget is the one thing not worth buying.

Why chains are the hardest case for plating

A necklace has two permanent friction points: the clasp, which you handle every day, and the nape of the neck, where the chain sits against skin and moves constantly. Add link-on-link abrasion and, if you layer, chain-on-chain contact.

That is why plating fails faster on chains than anywhere except rings and bracelets. It is also why gold-filled is worth its premium here more than on any other piece type.

Chain materials under $100, on the wear model stated across this site.

Plated over steel1-3 years for the coatingNo - steel underneathNo
Plated over brass6-18 monthsYes, once worn throughNo

Choosing a length and a link

Two practical things worth knowing before you buy, neither of which is about material:

Length. A choker sits at about 14-16 inches, princess at 17-19, matinee at 20-24. Pendant chains generally want princess length so the pendant sits below the collarbone. When layering, aim for at least 2 inches between chains so they do not tangle.

Link style. Cable and curb links are the most repairable and the most forgiving. Rope catches on knitwear. Herringbone gives the highest shine and kinks permanently if slept in or twisted - that is true of every herringbone in every material, and it is the single most useful warning on this page.

What to look for in a listing

  • The words “gold-filled”, “925” or “316L”. Standards with definitions behind them.
  • A stated weight in grams. Two chains that look identical can differ twofold in metal.
  • Clasp type. Lobster clasps outlast spring rings substantially.
  • “Solid” rather than hollow. Hollow chains dent permanently.

Every pick in detail

What each one is actually made of, how long it realistically lasts in that material, who it is for and who should skip it.

Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace - 14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.

1 · Best gold-tone

Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace

The clearest gold-filled starter chain in the set - the listing says gold-filled in those words, which is most of what you are paying for.

What it is
14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.
Realistic lifespan
Gold-filled worn daily typically holds its color 10-30 years. Assumes daily wear, removal for swimming, and no repeated chemical contact.
  • 1.5mm cable
  • 14K gold-filled
  • 18in

What works

  • Unambiguous gold-filled labeling - the material claim is checkable
  • Cable link is the most repairable chain style if a link ever opens
  • Gold-filled tolerates sweat and daily wear in a way plating does not

What does not

  • Costs roughly twice a plated chain of the same look
  • 1.5mm is dainty; it will not read as a statement chain

Skip it if: you change chains with the season. For a one-season trend piece a $12 plated chain is the rational purchase and we would not talk you out of it.

OLARCU Stainless Steel Cuban Link Chain, 3.5mm - Stainless steel cuban link, 3.5mm, silver tone. Solid metal, not plated - the color is the metal.

2 · Best value

OLARCU Stainless Steel Cuban Link Chain, 3.5mm

Under $8 for a chain that will not tarnish, will not turn your skin green and has nothing to wear off. The cheapest genuinely durable item on this site.

What it is
Stainless steel cuban link, 3.5mm, silver tone. Solid metal, not plated - the color is the metal.
Realistic lifespan
Effectively indefinite. Stainless does not tarnish and has no coating to wear off; the chain fails at the clasp long before the metal does.
  • 3.5mm cuban
  • stainless steel
  • 20in

What works

  • No coating means no coating failure - the honest advantage of steel
  • Survives chlorine, salt water and sweat that would destroy sterling or plating
  • Costs less than a jewelry cleaner

What does not

  • Steel reads cooler and harder than silver up close; some people dislike the tone
  • Cannot be resized or repaired by most jewelers - steel is difficult to solder

Skip it if: you have a nickel allergy and the listing does not state a nickel-free grade. Most stainless jewelry contains nickel in the alloy, bound but present.

ASHINE 925 Sterling Silver Box Chain Necklace, 1mm - 925 sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% other metals - usually copper). Solid metal throughout, not a coating.

3 · Best sterling

ASHINE 925 Sterling Silver Box Chain Necklace, 1mm

Solid metal all the way through at $26. Tarnish is a chore, not a failure, and that is the trade sterling asks you to accept.

What it is
925 sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% other metals - usually copper). Solid metal throughout, not a coating.
Realistic lifespan
Indefinite as a material. Sterling tarnishes rather than wears away - a dark film you polish off, not a coating that thins. The chain outlives the finish, permanently.
  • 1mm box
  • 925 sterling
  • solid metal

What works

  • Solid material - nothing to wear through, ever
  • Any tarnish is fully reversible with a cloth
  • The 925 stamp is a checkable standard, unlike an unpublished plating thickness

What does not

  • Will tarnish, and will tarnish faster on some people than others
  • 1mm box chain is delicate for a pendant heavier than a few grams

Skip it if: you will not polish it. Sterling that is never cleaned goes gray and stays gray, and you will end up thinking it was cheap when it was just neglected.

14k Gold Filled Satellite Ball Station Necklace, 18in - 14K gold-filled satellite chain (3mm ball stations on an 18in chain).

4 · Best for layering

14k Gold Filled Satellite Ball Station Necklace, 18in

The layering chain that is actually gold-filled, at roughly four times the price of the plated ones it sits next to in search results.

What it is
14K gold-filled satellite chain (3mm ball stations on an 18in chain).
Realistic lifespan
10-30 years for the gold layer. The ball stations add surface area but also break up the friction line at the back of the neck.
  • 3mm stations
  • 14K gold-filled
  • 18in

What works

  • Layering means chain-on-chain abrasion - the exact case where gold-filled earns its premium
  • Unambiguous material labeling

What does not

  • Expensive next to the plated satellite chains it competes with visually
  • Ball stations can catch on knitwear

Skip it if: you layer one chain at a time. Solo wear is gentle enough that plating survives, and you would be paying for durability you never use.

Joxevyia 14K Gold Filled Herringbone Necklace, 4mm - 14K gold-filled flat herringbone (snake bone) chain, 4mm.

5 · Best flat chain

Joxevyia 14K Gold Filled Herringbone Necklace, 4mm

Gold-filled herringbone under $10 is remarkable value. The honest caveat is structural, not material: every herringbone kinks eventually.

What it is
14K gold-filled flat herringbone (snake bone) chain, 4mm.
Realistic lifespan
10-30 years for the gold layer - but herringbone's failure mode is kinking, not wear. A kinked herringbone is permanently kinked in any material.
  • 4mm flat
  • 14K gold-filled
  • choker length

What works

  • Gold-filled at a price normally reserved for plating
  • Flat herringbone gives the highest shine per dollar of any chain style

What does not

  • Herringbone kinks if slept in, twisted, or stored coiled - this is true of every herringbone ever made
  • A kink cannot be repaired invisibly

Skip it if: you sleep in your necklaces. Herringbone is the one style where that habit will destroy the chain regardless of what it is made of.

14K Gold Plated 316L Stainless Steel Herringbone Necklace - 14K gold plated over 316L stainless steel. Plated - but over marine-grade steel, so when the gold thins the metal underneath is corrosion-proof rather than corrodible.

6 · Best budget gold-tone

14K Gold Plated 316L Stainless Steel Herringbone Necklace

The best construction in budget plated jewelry: gold over 316L. Same coating life as plating over brass, far better failure mode.

What it is
14K gold plated over 316L stainless steel. Plated - but over marine-grade steel, so when the gold thins the metal underneath is corrosion-proof rather than corrodible.
Realistic lifespan
Gold plating over steel typically 1-3 years of daily wear. Unlike plating over brass, the end state is a steel chain, not a green neck.
  • 14K plated
  • 316L base
  • herringbone

What works

  • 316L base is named - most plated jewelry hides its base metal
  • When the plating goes you still have a wearable steel chain
  • Under $10 for a construction that usually costs three times more

What does not

  • Herringbone kinks permanently if twisted, regardless of metal
  • Plating over steel still wears in 1-3 years

Skip it if: you want gold color that lasts. Only gold-filled or solid gold does; everything else is a countdown.

Jewlpire 925 Sterling Silver Cable Chain Necklace, 1.1mm - 925 sterling silver cable chain, 1.1mm.

7 · Best pendant chain

Jewlpire 925 Sterling Silver Cable Chain Necklace, 1.1mm

A plain sterling chain to hang something on, at $15. Buy the chain in solid metal and spend your money on the pendant.

What it is
925 sterling silver cable chain, 1.1mm.
Realistic lifespan
Indefinite as a material; tarnish is reversible with a cloth.
  • 1.1mm cable
  • 925 sterling
  • spring clasp

What works

  • Solid sterling at the price of a plated chain
  • Cable links are the easiest style to repair

What does not

  • 1.1mm is genuinely fine - it will not carry a heavy pendant
  • Spring clasps are the least secure common clasp

Skip it if: your pendant is heavy. A 1.1mm chain under a chunky pendant is the classic way to lose both.

BBXBD Stainless Steel Miami Cuban Link Chain, 6mm - Stainless steel Miami cuban link, 6mm. Solid metal - the silver color is the steel itself, not a finish.

8 · Best wide chain

BBXBD Stainless Steel Miami Cuban Link Chain, 6mm

A 6mm cuban chain for $10 that will look identical in five years. Steel's honesty is that there is no coating to lose.

What it is
Stainless steel Miami cuban link, 6mm. Solid metal - the silver color is the steel itself, not a finish.
Realistic lifespan
Effectively indefinite for the metal. The clasp is the only failure point.
  • 6mm cuban
  • stainless steel
  • solid

What works

  • 6mm reads as a real chain, not a delicate one
  • Nothing to tarnish, nothing to plate off
  • Cheap enough to own three lengths

What does not

  • Steel cannot be resized or repaired by most jewelers
  • Cool gray tone, permanently

Skip it if: you want gold color. Plated steel gives you the color for 1-3 years; gold-filled gives it for a decade at ten times this price.

Miabella Italian 925 Sterling Silver, 18Kt Gold Plated Mirror Link Necklace - 18Kt gold plated over 925 sterling silver, made in Italy. Gold over sterling is the vermeil construction, but the listing does not publish a plating thickness - and US vermeil requires at least 2.5 microns. Without the number we call this gold-plated sterling, not vermeil.

9 · Best gold-over-sterling

Miabella Italian 925 Sterling Silver, 18Kt Gold Plated Mirror Link Necklace

Gold over real sterling from an established Italian maker. The base metal is honest even though the plating spec is not published.

What it is
18Kt gold plated over 925 sterling silver, made in Italy. Gold over sterling is the vermeil construction, but the listing does not publish a plating thickness - and US vermeil requires at least 2.5 microns. Without the number we call this gold-plated sterling, not vermeil.
Realistic lifespan
If it clears 2.5 microns, 1-3 years of daily wear before visible thinning at friction points. If the plating is thinner, months. The listing does not let us tell you which - but the sterling underneath is worth keeping either way.
  • 18Kt plated
  • 925 sterling base
  • microns not published

What works

  • Sterling base, not brass - when the plating wears you own silver, not scrap
  • Italian chain manufacture is a genuine quality signal in chain-making

What does not

  • No published micron thickness, so 'vermeil' cannot be confirmed
  • Plated gold on a chain wears at the back of the neck first, and always will

Skip it if: you want gold that lasts a decade. Gold-filled has roughly ten times the gold and holds its color for ten times as long.

Common questions

What is the best necklace chain material?

Gold-filled for gold color that lasts, sterling silver for a repairable material with resale value, and stainless steel for zero maintenance at the lowest price. All three beat plating at this budget.

What chain length should I buy?

Princess length, roughly 17-19 inches, suits most necklines and sits well with a pendant. Chokers are 14-16 inches; matinee is 20-24. For layering, leave at least two inches between chains.

Why did my necklace turn my neck green?

The plating has worn through at the nape and the base metal - usually brass, containing copper - is reacting with your sweat. It washes off and is harmless, and it means the coating is gone there.

Do herringbone necklaces really kink?

Yes, all of them, in every material. The flat interlocking links cannot recover once bent sharply. Never sleep in one, never store it coiled, and never twist it. It is the one chain style with a genuine structural weakness.
