Best Sterling Silver Necklaces Under $50

A necklace has three parts that can be sterling, and a listing only has to be honest about the one it names. That gap is where this price band goes wrong.

The short answer

Top pick: the ASHINE 925 sterling silver box chain, for anyone who wants one silver chain that works with every pendant they will ever own - a box link is the most kink-resistant shape in sterling. Budget pick: the Jewlpire 925 sterling cable chain, the cheapest plain sterling chain here and the one to buy if you already have the pendant. Under $50, sterling is genuinely available - but check that the clasp is sterling too.

Fine sterling silver chains laid side by side on a pale surface

A necklace has three parts, and only one has to be honest

“925 sterling silver necklace” sounds like a complete description. It is not, because a necklace is at minimum three components - the chain, the clasp and, if there is one, the pendant - and a listing title that says sterling is making a claim about whichever of those the seller has in mind. There is nothing unlawful about that. The FTC guides govern what the word “sterling” may be applied to, which is metal that is at least 925 parts per thousand pure silver, and they do not require a seller to enumerate every component of an assembly.

In practice the gap shows up in two places at this price. A sterling pendant on a plated chain is common, because the pendant is what photographs and the chain is what costs weight. And a sterling chain with a base-metal clasp is extremely common, because a spring-ring or lobster clasp has a spring in it, and springs are not usually made of silver.

The second one is worth being relaxed about. A steel spring inside a sterling clasp shell is normal engineering, not a cheat, and it does not affect how the necklace wears. The first one is worth caring about, because a plated chain and a sterling chain age on completely different schedules, and the chain is most of the piece.

What to check, in order

The three components of a sterling necklace, what a listing typically says about each, and what it means for the piece.
ComponentWhat the listing usually saysWhat to look forIf it is not sterling
Chain“925”, sometimes only in the titleA stamp named in the description, not just the titlePlated brass. 6-18 months before the tone shifts
ClaspUsually nothing at all“925 clasp” if you want certaintyUsually fine. A steel spring in a silver shell is normal
PendantNamed by shape, not always by metalA separate metal statement for the pendantThe commonest shortcut at this price. Check it first
Stone, if any“Crystal”, “CZ”, “pearl”Whether a pearl is cultured or imitationImitation pearl is coated glass. Different product entirely

Run that table top to bottom on any listing in this band and you will separate the good ones from the rest in under a minute. The picks on this page have already been through it.

Why a box chain tops the page

Sterling silver at this price does not fail by tarnishing. Tarnish is a surface reaction with sulphur in the air, it is entirely reversible with a polishing cloth, and anyone telling you a sterling chain is ruined because it has gone dark is telling you they have not tried cleaning it. What actually ends a fine sterling chain is a kink - a permanent bend at a single link that catches the light wrong forever and eventually snaps there.

Chain shapes differ enormously in how prone they are to that, and the box link is the most resistant of the common shapes. Each link is a square cube that interlocks with its neighbors on all four faces, so the chain bends evenly along its length instead of folding at a point. A herringbone, by contrast, is the most kink-prone shape there is in any metal at any price. That is why the top pick here is a shape rather than a brand, and why it is the chain we would buy for someone who does not want to think about jewelry. The full set of trade-offs is in chain types explained.

Sterling is sold by weight, which is the whole price story

Unlike plating, where the price reflects the base metal and the coating is almost free, sterling pricing is dominated by how much silver is physically present. Silver is a traded commodity with a published benchmark price, so a sterling chain costs roughly what its weight costs plus manufacturing. That has one very practical consequence at this price band: under $50, you are buying a fine chain. A heavy sterling rope or a wide curb link is simply a different budget.

This is good news rather than bad. A fine sterling chain is the single most versatile necklace there is - it works with every pendant, layers with everything, and does not compete with whatever it is worn next to. It is also the reason a thick, heavy, bright-silver chain at $25 is worth being suspicious of: the weight has to come from somewhere, and if it is not coming from silver it is coming from brass under a coating. Sterling silver price explained does the arithmetic properly.

Pendants: solid, or plated over something

Three picks here are pendants rather than plain chains, and all three are included because the pendant itself is solid rather than a plated shape hung on a sterling chain. That distinction matters most on the two formats where the piece is handled.

A locket is opened and closed, which means a hinge, which means a moving metal joint that gets fingernails and thumbnails against it every time it is used. Plating does not survive a hinge. An engraved bar is the other case: engraving is removal of material, so engraving a plated piece cuts straight through the coating and leaves base metal at the bottom of every letter - exactly where moisture sits and exactly where a polishing cloth cannot reach. Solid sterling has nothing to cut through, which is the entire argument for buying engravable pieces in solid metal and the reason it has its own page at best engravable jewelry.

The pearl and the gold-tone exceptions

Two picks stretch the brief slightly and earn it. The pearl pendant is here because a cultured freshwater pearl on a sterling chain is a case where the organic component is genuinely the valuable part and the metal is the supporting cast - and because imitation pearl, which is coated glass, is sold into exactly the same search at exactly the same price. The FTC guides require imitation pearls to be described as such, so the word “cultured” in a listing is doing real work. Pearls explained has the rest.

The gold-tone necklace is here because it is the one gold-tone construction that belongs on a sterling page: the gold sits on a 925 base rather than on brass, so when the color eventually thins what is underneath is still a precious metal rather than something that marks skin. Be precise about the name, though. US vermeil requires at least 10K gold, a minimum of 2.5 microns, over sterling - and this listing, like almost every marketplace listing, publishes no thickness at all. So we call it gold-plated sterling, not vermeil: the base metal is the half of the claim you can verify and the microns are the half you cannot. The full comparison is in gold vermeil vs gold plated.

Living with sterling

Sterling needs two minutes of attention a few times a year and nothing else. It tarnishes because it contains copper - the 7.5 percent that makes up the non-silver part of the 92.5 percent standard - and that copper reacts with sulphur compounds in air. A polishing cloth reverses it completely. Storing pieces in a closed bag or a box with an anti-tarnish strip slows it down enough that most people never think about it.

What accelerates it is worth knowing, because it is mostly avoidable: chlorinated water, sulphur-containing cosmetics, rubber bands, and leaving a chain loose in a humid bathroom. None of these damage the silver, they just bring the tarnish forward. How to clean silver jewelry has the method, and how to store jewelry has the prevention, which is the cheaper half.

What we would actually buy

For one sterling necklace and no further thought: the box chain, because the shape is the part that decides whether a fine chain survives, and box is the shape that does. If you already own the pendant and need a chain to hang it on: the plain cable chain, which is the budget pick and the cheapest honest sterling on this page. For a gift that has to be a complete thing rather than a component: the pearl pendant, which is real cultured pearl and reads far above its price.

For something that has to carry a name or a date: the engraved bar, solid, because engraving and plating are incompatible. And if what you actually wanted was gold tone, the vermeil link necklace is the one construction that gives you it without giving up the silver underneath - though if gold tone is the real goal rather than a preference, best gold jewelry under $100 is the page to read instead of this one.

Everything here was under $50 when the price stamp at the top of this page was taken. Silver is a traded commodity and these prices move with it, so the live number in each row is the one to trust.

ASHINE 925 Sterling Silver Box Chain Necklace, 1mm - 925 sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% other metals - usually copper). Solid metal throughout, not a coating.

1 · Best overall

ASHINE 925 Sterling Silver Box Chain Necklace, 1mm

Solid metal all the way through at $26. Tarnish is a chore, not a failure, and that is the trade sterling asks you to accept.

What it is
925 sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% other metals - usually copper). Solid metal throughout, not a coating.
Realistic lifespan
Indefinite as a material. Sterling tarnishes rather than wears away - a dark film you polish off, not a coating that thins. The chain outlives the finish, permanently.
  • 1mm box
  • 925 sterling
  • solid metal

What works

  • Solid material - nothing to wear through, ever
  • Any tarnish is fully reversible with a cloth
  • The 925 stamp is a checkable standard, unlike an unpublished plating thickness

What does not

  • Will tarnish, and will tarnish faster on some people than others
  • 1mm box chain is delicate for a pendant heavier than a few grams

Skip it if: you will not polish it. Sterling that is never cleaned goes gray and stays gray, and you will end up thinking it was cheap when it was just neglected.

2 · Cheapest plain sterling

Jewlpire 925 Sterling Silver Cable Chain Necklace, 1.1mm

A plain sterling chain to hang something on, at $15. Buy the chain in solid metal and spend your money on the pendant.

925 sterling silver cable chain, 1.1mm.
Realistic lifespan
Indefinite as a material; tarnish is reversible with a cloth.
  • 1.1mm cable
  • 925 sterling

What works

  • Solid sterling at the price of a plated chain
  • Cable links are the easiest style to repair

What does not

  • 1.1mm is genuinely fine - it will not carry a heavy pendant
  • Spring clasps are the least secure common clasp

Skip it if: your pendant is heavy. A 1.1mm chain under a chunky pendant is the classic way to lose both.

3 · Best with a stone

EAMTI 925 Sterling Silver Pearl Pendant Necklace, 8.5-9mm

A single pearl on real silver. Nothing here is plated, which at $27 is the notable part.

What it is
8.5-9mm cultured freshwater pearl on a 925 sterling silver setting and chain.
Realistic lifespan
Pearl: decades with care. Sterling: indefinite with polishing. Both age gracefully rather than failing.
  • 8.5-9mm
  • 925 sterling
  • single pearl

What works

  • Sterling chain and setting - no plating to wear through
  • A single pearl is far more forgiving to store than a strand

What does not

  • Sterling tarnishes and pearls hate polish chemicals - clean around the pearl, never over it
  • One pearl means one visible flaw if it has one

Skip it if: you dip your jewelry in cleaning solution. Pearl and jewelry dip is the classic ruined-heirloom combination.

What works

  • Sterling throughout at a gift-appropriate price
  • A small heart is the safest possible gift shape

What does not

  • Extremely common design - it will not surprise anyone
  • Dainty chain limits what else can hang on it

Skip it if: you know their taste well. A generic heart is what you buy when you do not, and there are better options here if you do.

5 · Best locket

YOUFENG S925 Silver Heart Photo Locket Necklace

A real silver locket for $30. Lockets are hinges wrapped in sentiment - open it gently and it will last.

What it is
S925 sterling silver heart locket that holds photographs.
Realistic lifespan
Sterling is indefinite. The hinge is the wear point on every locket ever made, and it is not repairable at this price point.
  • 925 sterling
  • photo locket
  • hinged

What works

  • Sterling rather than plated - lockets are handled constantly, and plating on a handled piece fails fast
  • Holds real photographs, which is the entire point

What does not

  • Hinges loosen with repeated opening; that is a mechanical certainty
  • Fitting photographs neatly is fiddlier than the listing photos suggest

What works

  • Personalization is the whole gift, and this does it properly

What does not

Common questions

Is sterling silver worth buying under $50?

Yes, with one expectation set correctly: under $50 you are buying a fine chain, not a heavy one, because sterling is priced largely by weight. A fine sterling chain is also the most versatile necklace there is, so the constraint and the best use of the category happen to line up. A thick, heavy, bright chain at this price is the thing to be suspicious of.

Does a 925 stamp mean the whole necklace is sterling?

Not necessarily. The stamp applies to the component it is on. The common pattern at this price is a sterling pendant on a plated chain, or a sterling chain with a base-metal clasp. The clasp rarely matters - a steel spring inside a silver shell is normal. The chain matters a great deal, because it is most of the piece and it ages on a completely different schedule if it is plated.

Why does my sterling silver necklace turn black?

Tarnish, which is the copper in sterling reacting with sulphur compounds in the air. Sterling is 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent other metal, usually copper, and that copper is what darkens. It is a surface reaction, it is completely reversible with a polishing cloth, and it is not damage. Storing the chain in a closed bag slows it down considerably.

Which sterling silver chain type lasts longest?

Box and cable links are the most robust of the fine shapes, because they bend evenly along their length rather than folding at a point. Herringbone is the most fragile - it kinks permanently, in any metal, at any price. Since tarnish is reversible and kinking is not, chain shape is a bigger durability decision than anything else on a sterling listing.

Is sterling silver or stainless steel better for a necklace?

Steel needs no maintenance at all and costs much less; sterling is a precious metal, takes a brighter polish, can be repaired and resized by a jeweler, and holds value in a way steel never will. For a chain worn in water and forgotten about, steel. For a piece meant to last and to matter, sterling. Both are solid materials, which is what separates them from plated alternatives at the same price.
