What each one is
Gold plating is a film deposited electrolytically onto a base metal. Under 16 CFR 23.3 it must be at least 10K gold and at least 0.175 microns thick to be called gold plate at all. To put 0.175 microns in perspective, a sheet of household aluminum foil is roughly 16 microns thick - about 90 times thicker than the minimum gold layer on a legally-described gold-plated chain.
Gold-filled is not plating at all. A sheet of gold alloy is mechanically bonded to a base-metal core under heat and pressure, and the rule requires that bonded layer to be at least 1/20 - 5% - of the finished item’s total metal weight. It is a physically different construction, not a thicker version of the same thing, and the bond is why it does not flake the way plating does.

The arithmetic
Every figure below assumes: daily wear, no removal for showering, no perfume contact, no swimming, and a chain worn against skin at the back of the neck. Change any of those and the numbers move.
A minimum-spec plated chain carries roughly 0.175 microns of gold. Abrasion at the two friction points - clasp and nape - removes it unevenly, so what you see first is not uniform fading but a patch: a pale line where the chain sits, or a clasp that has gone silvery. On our model that appears at 6-18 months.
Gold-filled carries so much more gold that the failure mode changes entirely. Rather than wearing through in months, it thins over years and typically shows base metal only at a sharp edge or a repeatedly-flexed link. 10-30 years is the realistic range, and the wide spread is honest: it depends far more on your habits than on the product.
Where plating is genuinely the right buy
Plating is not a scam and we are not going to pretend otherwise. There are three cases where it is the correct purchase:
- Earrings. Earrings barely abrade. A plated hoop can look right for years because nothing rubs it. This is the single most underrated fact in budget jewelry buying.
- Trend pieces. If the style will be over in a year, buying a ten-year material for it is the actual waste.
- Plating over named stainless steel. When the gold goes you are left with a steel chain rather than a brass one. Same coating life, far better ending.
Where gold-filled is worth the premium
Chains worn daily, bracelets of any kind, and anything you layer. Layering means chain-on-chain abrasion, which is the most aggressive wear a necklace ever sees, and it is precisely where plating fails fastest and gold-filled earns its price.
Reading the listing
Gold-filled is worth more, so sellers who have it say it. If the words “gold-filled” do not appear, the item is not gold-filled. Phrases like “14K gold”, “gold tone”, “real gold plated” and “18K gold over stainless” all describe coatings. That single test resolves most of the confusion this page exists to fix.

Is gold filled real gold?
The layer is real gold alloy - typically 12K or 14K - and it is a substantial amount: at least 5% of the item’s weight. But the core is base metal, so the piece as a whole is not solid gold and should never be described that way.
Will gold filled turn my skin green?
Very unlikely while the gold layer is intact, which is most of its life. Green skin comes from copper in a base metal reacting with sweat, and gold-filled’s thick bonded layer keeps the core away from your skin far more reliably than plating does.
Can gold filled jewelry get wet?
Yes, and it handles it far better than plating. Rinse and dry it afterwards. Chlorine and salt water are still worth avoiding - not because the gold cares, but because repeated exposure works at the bond over years.
