Gold plated means a base-metal item has been electroplated with gold - a minimum of 0.175 microns under the FTC guides. When a listing says “18K gold plated”, the 18K describes the coating. The item underneath is usually brass.

The definition
Under 16 CFR 23.3, a product may be marked “Gold Plate” or “Gold Electroplate” when an electrolytic process has applied gold - or a gold alloy of not less than 10 karat fineness - to all significant surfaces, with a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to 0.175 microns of fine gold. At 2.5 microns it may be called “Heavy Gold Electroplate”.
The regulation also notes something worth understanding: a product containing 1 micron of 12 karat gold is equivalent to half a micron of 24-karat gold. Thickness figures on lower-karat coatings are therefore flattering by construction.
How thin 0.175 microns actually is
Household aluminum foil is roughly 16 microns thick. The legal minimum gold plating is about 1/90 of that. It is a film measured in ten-thousandths of a millimeter, and it is what stands between the brass and your skin.
Most plated jewelry is somewhat above the minimum - but almost none publishes a figure, and there is no requirement to. In the absence of a number, the honest working assumption is that it is near the minimum, because a seller who had gone thicker would say so.
The karat confusion, resolved
This is the single most misread phrase in jewelry retail. In “18K gold plated”:
- 18K describes the purity of the gold in the coating.
- Plated tells you it is a coating.
- Nothing in the phrase describes the item, which is usually brass.
The rule requires the karat designation to sit immediately before the plating term with equal conspicuousness - which is why you see “18K Gold Plated” as a unit. Read the whole unit, not the first two characters.

The spread across placements is larger than the spread across price. A $10 plated earring will outlast a $40 plated ring by years, because abrasion decides this, not cost.
Plating is not a scam
A $20 plated chain that looks right for a year is fair value for a year. The failure is never the product - it is the information. People buy plating believing they bought something permanent, and nobody in the transaction had an incentive to correct them.
Buy plating deliberately: for earrings, for trend pieces, or when it is over stainless steel so the ending is a steel chain rather than a green neck. Price it as a one-to-two-year product and it is a perfectly sensible purchase.

The coating is real 18-karat gold. The item is not - it is base metal with a gold film on it. Both facts are true simultaneously, and the phrase is written to let you notice only the first one.
How long does gold plating last?

Can gold plated jewelry be re-plated?
Technically yes, but it usually costs more than the piece is worth, and if the base metal is unknown the result is unpredictable. Re-plating makes economic sense for vermeil, where the base is sterling, and rarely otherwise.
Why did my gold plated jewelry turn my skin green?
The plating has worn through at a contact point and the base metal - typically brass, which contains copper - is now touching your skin. Copper reacts with sweat to form compounds that stain. It is harmless, it washes off, and it means the coating is gone there.
