Is Gold Plated Jewelry Worth Anything?
As scrap, no. As something to wear for a year or two, often yes. Those are different questions and conflating them is how people end up disappointed.

The short answer
As scrap or resale, effectively nothing. A minimum-spec plating is around 0.175 microns of gold - far too little to recover economically, so refiners pay nothing for it. As something to wear for a year or two at a low price, it can be perfectly good value.

The scrap answer
Gold plating is measured in fractions of a micron. On a typical chain that is a few thousandths of a gram of gold. Recovering it requires chemical processing that costs more than the recovered metal is worth, so scrap dealers and refiners will not take plated jewelry, or will take it for effectively nothing.
This is not dealers being difficult. It is arithmetic. There genuinely is not enough gold there to pay for the process of getting it out.
The resale answer
Plated jewelry resells only on design, brand or nostalgia - never on material. A vintage plated piece from a recognized maker can sell for real money; an unbranded plated chain from a marketplace cannot, at any age.
If you are buying and hoping to recover some of the cost later, plating is the wrong category entirely. So, honestly, is most jewelry.

Note that vermeil quietly outperforms gold-filled here, despite having far less gold. That is the sterling base doing the work: when the gold goes, you own silver.
The more useful question
“Is it worth anything?” is usually a proxy for “did I waste my money?”, and that has a better answer: cost per year of wear.
A $20 plated chain worn happily for a year cost $20 a year. If you liked wearing it, that is a fair trade for a year of an object you enjoyed, and its scrap value was never the point. The disappointment comes from expecting permanence, which is an information problem rather than a value problem.
When to buy something that holds value instead
- Gifts intended to last. Sterling costs about the same as decent plating and is a real material.
- Anything you would be upset to lose. If the emotional weight is high, put it in a material that can be repaired and remade.
- Milestone purchases. Solid gold is the only category here where the metal sets a floor under the price.
