How to Tell If Gold Is Real

Three home checks are genuinely informative, several popular ones are not, and one question can only be answered by a jeweler.

The short answer

Check the hallmark first (10K, 14K, 585, 750), then the magnet test - gold is not magnetic - then weight for size, since gold is very dense. None of these distinguishes solid gold from thick plating; only a jeweler can.

Gold rings and a hallmark being examined closely

The hallmark is the first and best check

Solid gold is stamped, because the stamp adds value and manufacturers do it as a matter of routine. Look on the clasp, the inside of a band or the back of a pendant.

Gold marks and what each actually means.
MarkMeaningSolid?
10K / 41741.7% gold - the US legal minimumYes
14K / 58558.3% goldYes

The letters after the number are what matter. A karat figure followed by GF, GP, GEP, HGE or RGP describes a surface, not the object.

The tests that work

Magnet. Gold is not magnetic. A piece firmly attracted to a strong magnet is not solid gold - though a non-magnetic piece is not necessarily gold either, since brass, steel of some grades and many other metals are also non-magnetic. It rules out rather than confirms.

Weight for size. Gold is very dense - considerably heavier than brass or steel at the same dimensions. A chain that looks substantial and feels light is unlikely to be solid gold. This is a genuinely useful feel test.

The price sanity check. This is the most reliable check available to a buyer online. Solid gold has an irreducible metal cost at any given size. A wide chain priced in the low hundreds cannot be solid gold, because the raw metal alone would cost multiples of that. When the price and the claim disagree, the price is telling the truth.

The tests that do not work

  • The bite test. Folklore. You will mark soft metals that are not gold and damage your teeth, and modern alloys are hard enough that it proves nothing.
  • The ceramic scratch test. Dragging a piece across unglazed ceramic to check the streak color damages the item, and gives an unreliable result on plated pieces, where you may only be scratching the coating.
  • The vinegar test. Widely repeated, unreliable, and it can damage the piece and any stones in it.
  • “It has not tarnished so it must be gold.” Stainless steel, titanium and rhodium-plated pieces do not tarnish either.

The question you cannot answer at home

None of these home checks distinguishes solid gold from heavy gold plating over a non-magnetic base. The surface is real gold in both cases, the magnet says nothing, and a well-made plated piece can feel reasonably substantial.

Only a jeweler can settle it, using acid testing, electronic conductivity testing or X-ray fluorescence. For anything of real value - an inherited piece, a purchase you are unsure about - that is worth doing rather than guessing.

Every pick in detail

What each one is actually made of, how long it realistically lasts in that material, who it is for and who should skip it.

Belacqua 1/2 Carat Lab-Grown Diamond Stud Earrings, 14K Yellow Gold - Lab-grown diamonds set in solid 14K yellow gold. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds - same carbon, same crystal structure, same Mohs 10 hardness. The gold is solid, not plated or filled.

1 · Best verified solid gold

Belacqua 1/2 Carat Lab-Grown Diamond Stud Earrings, 14K Yellow Gold

The first item here where nothing is a coating and nothing clouds. That is what the price is buying.

What it is
Lab-grown diamonds set in solid 14K yellow gold. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds - same carbon, same crystal structure, same Mohs 10 hardness. The gold is solid, not plated or filled.
Realistic lifespan
Effectively permanent. Mohs 10 stones in solid 14K gold is the only combination on this site with no wear-limited component at all.
  • 0.5ct total
  • Mohs 10
  • solid 14K gold

What works

  • Solid gold settings - no plating to wear off, ever
  • Real diamonds at a fraction of mined-diamond pricing
  • Nothing on this product has a countdown attached to it

What does not

  • Lab-grown diamond resale is thin and prices have fallen steadily
  • The most expensive earrings on the site by a wide margin

Skip it if: you are buying for resale or as a store of value. Lab-grown prices have been falling; buy these to wear for thirty years, which they will.

Best for buying earrings once. Score 9.2/10 from published specifications.

Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace - 14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.

2 · Best verified gold-filled

Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace

The clearest gold-filled starter chain in the set - the listing says gold-filled in those words, which is most of what you are paying for.

What it is
14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.
Realistic lifespan
Gold-filled worn daily typically holds its color 10-30 years. Assumes daily wear, removal for swimming, and no repeated chemical contact.
  • 1.5mm cable
  • 14K gold-filled
  • 18in

What works

  • Unambiguous gold-filled labeling - the material claim is checkable
  • Cable link is the most repairable chain style if a link ever opens
  • Gold-filled tolerates sweat and daily wear in a way plating does not

What does not

  • Costs roughly twice a plated chain of the same look
  • 1.5mm is dainty; it will not read as a statement chain

Skip it if: you change chains with the season. For a one-season trend piece a $12 plated chain is the rational purchase and we would not talk you out of it.

Best for a first chain you want to still own in ten years. Score 8.8/10 from published specifications.

14k Gold Filled Rope Chain Necklace, 20in - 14K gold-filled rope chain, 20in. Same 5%-by-weight gold-filled standard as the cable chain, in a heavier braided link.

3 · Best weight test example

14k Gold Filled Rope Chain Necklace, 20in

A heavy gold-filled rope at a heavy price. Buy it for the weight and the material, not for a bargain.

What it is
14K gold-filled rope chain, 20in. Same 5%-by-weight gold-filled standard as the cable chain, in a heavier braided link.
Realistic lifespan
10-30 years of regular wear for the gold layer. Rope links are the most abrasion-prone style, so friction points at the back of the neck wear first.
  • rope link
  • 14K gold-filled
  • 20in

What works

  • Real gold-filled weight - this is the chain plating is imitating
  • Rope link hides small scratches better than a flat chain

What does not

  • The most expensive chain in this set by a wide margin
  • Rope links are difficult to repair cleanly if one goes

Skip it if: your budget is under $100. At that price you are better served by a plain gold-filled cable chain than by stretching for a rope.

Common questions

Does real gold stick to a magnet?

No. Gold is not magnetic, so a piece firmly attracted to a strong magnet is not solid gold. But a non-magnetic piece is not automatically gold - brass and many other metals are also non-magnetic.

What does 585 mean on jewelry?

585 parts per thousand gold - 58.5% - which is the millesimal way of writing 14K. It indicates solid gold, unlike a karat number followed by GF, GP or HGE.

Can gold plated jewelry have a karat stamp?

Yes, and this is the main source of confusion. A stamp reading “18K GP” or “14K GF” is describing the coating or bonded layer. Always read the letters after the number.

How can I be certain a piece is solid gold?

Have a jeweler test it. Acid testing, electronic conductivity testing and X-ray fluorescence all give a definitive answer, and XRF is non-destructive. Home tests can rule things out but cannot confirm.
