Real Gold vs Plated: How to Tell
This is the harder version of the question, because the surface is real gold in both cases. Here is what you can establish yourself and what you cannot.

The short answer
Look for wear at friction points - plating thins at clasps and edges, exposing a different color underneath. Check the stamp for GP, GEP, HGE or GF. Weigh it in your hand. For certainty, only a jeweler’s test settles it.

Why this is harder than “is it gold”
A plated piece is gold on the surface. It looks like gold, it does not tarnish like base metal while the coating is intact, and it is not magnetic if the base is brass. Every quick test for “is this gold” returns the same answer for both.
So the tests that work here are about finding the boundary between coating and core - which means looking where the coating is thinnest.
Look where plating wears first
Plating does not fade evenly; it wears at friction points. On a used piece those are predictable, and they are the most informative places to look:

A visible color change at any of those points is conclusive: solid gold has no different metal underneath to show.
The stamp still does most of the work
Manufacturers stamp gold-filled and plated pieces accurately because the terms have legal definitions and using them wrongly is deceptive. Look for:
- Solid: a bare karat or millesimal mark - 10K, 14K, 585, 750 - with no letters after it.
- Gold-filled: GF, or a fraction such as 1/20 14K GF.
- Plated: GP, GEP, HGE, or vermeil for gold over sterling.
- Nothing at all: assume plated. Solid gold is stamped as a matter of course.
The price test, which is the strongest one online
Solid gold has an irreducible metal cost that scales with size. Work out roughly how much metal a piece contains and ask whether the asking price could cover it.
An 8mm solid gold chain contains several thousand dollars of metal at any realistic gold price. A listing offering one for three figures is not describing a solid chain, whatever the title says. This test requires no equipment and cannot be fooled.
Weight and sound
Gold is dense. A solid gold piece feels noticeably heavier than a plated one of the same size - the difference is large enough to feel, not subtle.
Some people also use sound: dropped on a hard surface, solid gold gives a duller, deeper tone than plated base metal. It is real but it is unreliable as a lone test, and dropping jewelry on hard surfaces is a poor habit.
What only a jeweler can do
Three definitive methods, none of which are available at home:
- Acid testing - reliable, mildly destructive, cheap.
- Electronic conductivity testing - non-destructive, good at detecting plating.
- X-ray fluorescence (XRF) - non-destructive, reads actual composition, the gold standard for this question.
For an inherited piece or anything you are considering buying at solid-gold prices, that is worth doing rather than guessing.

Common questions
How can you tell gold plated from solid gold?
Look for wear at clasps and edges where plating thins first, check the stamp for GP, GEP, HGE or GF, and weigh it in your hand - gold is dense. For certainty, a jeweler’s XRF or acid test is the only definitive answer.
Will a magnet tell me if gold is plated?
Not reliably. If the base metal is brass - which it usually is - the piece will be non-magnetic either way. The magnet test only helps when the base is a magnetic steel.
Does plated gold wear off in a specific pattern?
Yes, and it is diagnostic. It wears at friction points first - clasps, the nape of a chain, the underside of a ring, raised edges. Uneven color at those points means a coating.
Is gold-filled the same as plated?
No. Gold-filled has a mechanically bonded layer that must be at least 5% of the item’s weight - roughly a hundred times minimum-spec plating. It is stamped GF and it is a legally distinct category.
