Gold-Filled vs Rolled Gold

Both are bonded gold on a base core, and both are far better than plating. One carries twice the gold of the other, and the mark tells you which.

The short answer

Gold-filled carries a bonded karat gold layer of at least 1/20th of the piece's weight - 5% - and is marked GF or with the fraction, as in 1/20 14K GF or 14/20 GF. Rolled gold plate carries less than 1/20th but at least 1/40th, and is marked RGP. Both are real bonded gold rather than electroplating, so both last years rather than months; gold-filled simply has roughly twice the gold to wear through.

Both terms describe the same manufacturing idea

Gold-filled and rolled gold plate are both mechanically bonded gold: a sheet of karat gold alloy is heat- and pressure-bonded to a base core, and the bonded stock is then drawn or stamped into chain, wire or findings. The base is usually a copper-zinc alloy - the mill-supplier standard is CDA 220, which the Copper Development Association lists as Commercial Bronze, 90%.

That is a fundamentally different process from electroplating, where gold ions are deposited onto a finished item from a solution in a layer measured in microns. Bonded gold is thick enough to be measured as a proportion of the item's weight rather than as a coating thickness, and that difference is why both of these tiers last years while plating lasts months to a couple of years. The side-by-side on plating is gold-filled vs gold-plated.

What separates the two terms is purely the quantity. The FTC Jewelry Guides set the thresholds, and the fraction in the mark is the specification.

The fractions, and what they are a fraction of

The bonded and plated gold tiers as the FTC Jewelry Guides define them. The fraction is a proportion of the item's total metal weight, not a thickness.
MarkWhat it meansGold as a share of weightBonded or deposited?
1/20 14K GF or 14/20 GFGold-filledAt least 5%Bonded
1/40 14K RGPRolled gold plateAt least 2.5%, less than 5%Bonded
HGEHeavy gold electroplateNot expressed by weight - 2.5 microns minimumDeposited
GP / GEPGold plate / gold electroplateNot expressed by weight - 0.175 microns minimumDeposited

Read that table once and the vocabulary stops being confusing. A fraction in the mark means bonded gold and a weight proportion. A micron figure - or no figure at all - means a deposited coating. The 14/20 form that turns up constantly on American findings is the trade shorthand for the same thing: the mill supplier's own technical page states that 14/20 GF is the designation for 14 karat gold-filled, the 1/20 being the ratio of karat gold to base metal by weight. The full mark-by-mark decode is in gold-filled markings explained.

What double the gold buys you in practice

Gold-filled worn daily typically holds its color for 10 to 30 years. Rolled gold plate carries roughly half the gold on the same shape, so it wears through sooner - but “sooner” here still means years, and at the friction points first: the back of the neck on a chain, the shank of a ring, the edges of a clasp. Neither tier goes patchy in a season the way a plated piece does.

The reason this distinction matters so much more in practice than it does on paper is vintage. RGP was a common American mark for most of the twentieth century and is rare on new jewelry, so almost every RGP piece you encounter is second-hand - and it has already spent decades wearing down the thinner of the two layers. A new gold-filled chain is at the start of its life. A 1950s RGP chain may be most of the way through its. When buying vintage, the mark tells you the tier, and the condition of the high-wear points tells you where in its life it is.

How to tell which you are looking at

  • Find the mark. On a chain it is on or beside the clasp tag. On a ring, inside the shank. On earrings, on the post or the back of the setting.
  • Read the fraction first, the karat second. 1/20 means gold-filled; 1/40 means rolled gold plate. The 14K part describes the alloy that was bonded, not how much of it there is - which is why “14K” alone on a cheap chain tells you almost nothing.
  • Check for wear-through at the friction points. On both tiers, the first place base metal shows is where the piece rubs: the nape of the neck, the underside of a ring, the inside of a clasp. A pinkish or coppery tinge there is the bonded layer gone.
  • Do not rely on a magnet. Neither gold nor the usual copper-zinc core is magnetic, so a magnet test tells you the piece is not steel - nothing more useful than that. Our testing notes are in how to tell if gold is real.
  • If there is no mark at all, assume plating. Sellers entitled to use a bonded-gold term use it, because it is worth money. Silence is information.

Which to buy, if you have the choice

On new jewelry you mostly do not have the choice: gold-filled is what is sold, and RGP is a mark you encounter rather than a product you select. Where it does come up - a vintage shop, an estate lot, a second-hand listing - the decision is straightforward. Pay gold-filled prices for gold-filled marks. Pay less for RGP, because it has less gold and, if it is old, less of that remaining. Treat an unmarked gold-tone piece as plated whatever the seller says, and price it accordingly.

The fourth pick above is on this page as a live example of the problem rather than as a recommendation. It is a handsome wide paperclip chain marketed as 14K gold, and the listing publishes no layer thickness and never uses the words gold-filled. That silence is the whole issue: if it is gold-filled, it is worth its price; if it is heavy plating, it is not. We cannot tell you which, so the page says so rather than guessing - which is also the honest answer to give yourself in the aisle.

What this means for your next purchase

Buy the word, not the number. A listing that says “gold-filled” is making a claim with a federal weight threshold behind it, and a listing that says “18K gold” on a $12 chain is describing a coating. Between those two extremes sits RGP, which is a real bonded tier at half the gold and is overwhelmingly a vintage mark. Everything else in the gold-tone aisle - gold dipped, gold overlay used loosely, gold tone, gold finish - is covered in gold dipped vs gold plated and gold types explained.

Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace - 14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.

1 · Best gold-filled starter chain

Kooljewelry 14k Gold Filled Cable Chain Necklace

The clearest gold-filled starter chain in the set - the listing says gold-filled in those words, which is most of what you are paying for.

What it is
14K gold-filled (1.5mm cable, 18in). Gold-filled means a bonded gold layer that is at least 5% of the item's total weight - a legal definition under the FTC jewelry guides, not a marketing phrase.
Realistic lifespan
Gold-filled worn daily typically holds its color 10-30 years. Assumes daily wear, removal for swimming, and no repeated chemical contact.
  • 1.5mm cable
  • 14K gold-filled
  • 18in

What works

  • Unambiguous gold-filled labeling - the material claim is checkable
  • Cable link is the most repairable chain style if a link ever opens
  • Gold-filled tolerates sweat and daily wear in a way plating does not

What does not

  • Costs roughly twice a plated chain of the same look
  • 1.5mm is dainty; it will not read as a statement chain

Skip it if: you change chains with the season. For a one-season trend piece a $12 plated chain is the rational purchase and we would not talk you out of it.

2 · Best value gold-filled

EVERU 14k Gold Filled Huggie Hoop Earrings

Gold-filled huggies under $10 is the single best price-to-material ratio we found in earrings.

What it is
14K gold-filled huggie hoops.
Realistic lifespan
10-30 years for the gold layer. Huggies sit tight against the lobe and see very little abrasion.
  • huggie
  • 14K gold-filled
  • hinged

What works

  • Gold-filled at a plated-jewelry price
  • Hinged closure is the most secure everyday hoop style

What does not

  • Small - if you want a visible hoop, this is not it
  • Hinges are the first thing to loosen on any huggie, in any material

Skip it if: your piercing is fresh. New piercings want implant-grade titanium, not a brass-cored gold-filled hoop.

Shinybox 14K Gold-Filled CZ Chain Bracelet, Adjustable - Fine gold-tone chain carrying a single bezel-and-prong-set cubic zirconia. The listing states 14K gold-filled in those words, which is a legally defined term rather than a marketing one - and adds lead-free and nickel-free, with no standard named for either. It adjusts by a slide bead up to 7.5in.

3 · Best gold-filled bracelet

Shinybox 14K Gold-Filled CZ Chain Bracelet, Adjustable

The listing says gold-filled, which is the word sellers only use when they have it. An adjustable gold-filled chain at this price is a genuinely good buy.

What it is
Fine gold-tone chain carrying a single bezel-and-prong-set cubic zirconia. The listing states 14K gold-filled in those words, which is a legally defined term rather than a marketing one - and adds lead-free and nickel-free, with no standard named for either. It adjusts by a slide bead up to 7.5in.
Realistic lifespan
Gold-filled on a wrist typically 5-15 years - shorter than on a neck because wrists abrade more, still roughly ten times a plated equivalent. The slide bead runs along the chain, so that section sees more friction than the rest. The CZ goes first: 2-5 years of daily wear before it clouds.
  • 14K gold-filled
  • adjusts to 7.5in
  • single CZ station

What works

  • Gold-filled on the placement where the material difference matters most
  • Slide-bead adjustment removes the sizing risk from gifting it
  • The stone is bezel-and-prong set rather than glued, which is the setting that actually holds

What does not

  • No chain width or weight figure published beyond the gold-filled term itself
  • Nickel-free is claimed without naming a standard, so it is not checkable
  • 7.5in is the top of the adjustment - it will not reach a large wrist

Skip it if: you need the sizing to be fixed rather than adjustable. A slide bead can migrate on an active wrist, and a fixed-length chain cannot.

Luxmad 14K Gold Paperclip Chain Necklace - 14K gold over a base core (paperclip link). The listing markets it as 14K gold but does not publish a gold-layer thickness or state gold-filled, so treat it as a coated chain, not solid gold.

4 · The listing we cannot verify

Luxmad 14K Gold Paperclip Chain Necklace

A good-looking wide paperclip chain at a mid price - but the listing will not tell you how much gold is on it, and that is the whole question.

What it is
14K gold over a base core (paperclip link). The listing markets it as 14K gold but does not publish a gold-layer thickness or state gold-filled, so treat it as a coated chain, not solid gold.
Realistic lifespan
Unpublished thickness means an unpublishable lifespan. If it is gold-filled (5% gold by weight) expect 5-15 years of regular wear; if it is heavy plating, 1-3 years. The listing does not let us tell you which.
  • 2.5-5mm link
  • 14K stated
  • thickness not published

What works

  • Wide paperclip links read as a more expensive chain than the price suggests
  • Multiple widths listed, so you can match an existing stack

What does not

  • No published micron thickness, and no gold-filled claim - the two things that decide how long it lasts
  • Priced above unambiguous gold-filled chains that do publish their spec

Skip it if: you want a chain you can hand down. Buy a chain whose listing says gold-filled in those words, so you know what you bought.

Common questions

Is rolled gold the same as gold-filled?

No, though they are made the same way. Both are karat gold bonded to a base core, but gold-filled carries at least 1/20th of the item's weight in gold and rolled gold plate carries at least 1/40th. Gold-filled has roughly twice the gold, so it wears through later.

What does RGP mean on jewelry?

Rolled gold plate. It is a bonded gold layer - genuinely better than electroplating - carrying at least 1/40th of the item's weight in karat gold. It was a common American mark through most of the twentieth century and is rare on new pieces, so an RGP find is almost always vintage.

Is rolled gold worth buying?

Yes, at the right price. It is real bonded gold and will outlast any plated piece. The caution is age: most RGP in circulation is decades old and has already spent much of its thinner gold layer, so inspect the clasp, the nape of the chain and the underside of a ring before paying.

How long does rolled gold last?

Years rather than months - it is bonded gold, not plating - but with roughly half the gold of gold-filled it reaches base metal sooner on the same shape. Gold-filled worn daily typically holds its color for 10 to 30 years; RGP is the shorter version of the same curve.

Does gold-filled or rolled gold contain nickel?

The gold layer does not, and the usual base core is a copper-zinc alloy rather than a nickel one - the mill standard is CDA 220. That makes both far safer for reactive skin than plated base metal, though neither is a certified nickel-free material. For a diagnosed allergy, titanium is the zero-question option - see the sensitive-skin guide.
