How to Clean Gold Jewelry
Gold does not tarnish, so cleaning gold is about removing a film rather than reversing a reaction. That makes it far simpler than silver.

The short answer
Warm water, a drop of dish soap, a soft brush, rinse and dry. Gold does not tarnish, so what dulls it is a film of soap and skin oil - which washes off. For gold-filled, the same method but no polish and no ultrasonic.

Why cleaning gold is easier than cleaning silver
Gold is chemically inert. It does not tarnish, oxidize or corrode - which is why gold artifacts come out of the ground looking like gold.
So a gold piece that looks dull has not changed chemically. It has a film on it: soap residue, hand lotion, skin oil, cosmetics. Removing a film is a washing problem, not a chemistry problem, and warm soapy water solves it.
The one caveat is alloy. Lower karats contain more copper and silver, so a 10K or 14K piece can show slight surface discolouration where it sits against skin. It cleans off and it is not damage.

The pattern is simple: the less gold there is, the gentler you have to be. Solid gold tolerates everything because there is no coating to remove. Plated tolerates almost nothing because the coating is measured in fractions of a micron.
Gold-filled specifically
Gold-filled has a substantial bonded gold layer - at least 5% of the item’s weight - so it is far more robust than plating. Soapy water and a soft cloth are fine, and a gentle brush is fine on the chain.
What to avoid is abrasive polish and ultrasonic cleaning. Polish is formulated to remove metal, and there is no reason to remove gold you paid for. Ultrasonic cavitation can work at the bond over repeated cycles.
Watch the stones, not the gold
On a stone-set gold piece, the gold is almost never the constraint - the stone is. Warm soapy water is safe for diamond, sapphire, ruby, moissanite and CZ.
It is not safe for pearls, opals, turquoise, amber, coral or emerald. Those get a plain damp cloth, cleaned around rather than over.
And if the stone is glued rather than set - common in very inexpensive pieces - hot water and soaking will loosen the adhesive. Use warm water, briefly.
Cleaning over a bowl, not a sink
Small practical point that saves real money: rinse in a bowl of clean water, not under a running tap over an open drain. Rings and small stones go down plugholes with remarkable efficiency.
