How to Clean Gold Plated Jewelry
Almost every cleaning method removes plating. There is exactly one that does not, and it is a soft dry cloth.

The short answer
A soft dry cloth, and essentially nothing else. Plating is a coating from 0.175 microns thick - polish, dips, ultrasonic cleaners and stiff brushes all remove it. If it needs more than a wipe, a brief pass with a barely-damp cloth, dried immediately.

Why the rules are so restrictive
The FTC minimum for a piece to be called gold plate is 0.175 microns of gold. Household aluminum foil is roughly 16 microns thick - so the gold layer is about 1/90 of a piece of foil.
Every common cleaning method is designed to remove material from a surface. That is fine on solid metal, where there is plenty. On a coating that thin, it is the coating that comes off.

The habits that matter more than the cleaning
Because you can do so little to clean plating, almost all the leverage is in prevention:
- Perfume and hairspray first, jewelry last. Alcohol-based products attack the surface directly, and this is the most common avoidable cause of premature wear.
- Off for showers, swimming and the gym. Soap at friction points is what actually removes plating in ordinary life.
- Wipe after wearing. Sweat is mildly acidic; ten seconds with a dry cloth removes it.
- Store dry, closed and separated. A scratch from a harder piece is where base metal starts showing.
Applied consistently, these roughly double the life of a plated piece - which turns a six-month chain into a year or more.
What to do when it has already worn
Honestly: nothing that is worth doing. Once base metal shows at the clasp or the nape, cleaning will not bring it back, and re-plating usually costs more than the piece did.
The exception is vermeil, where the base is sterling silver. Re-gilding a vermeil piece is a real option because the underlying material is worth the work.
For everything else, treat it as a piece that has reached the end of its finish and replace it - ideally with gold-filled, which carries roughly a hundred times the gold and tolerates being cleaned properly.
The green-skin question
If a plated piece is marking your skin green, the plating has worn through and the base metal - usually brass, which contains copper - is in contact. Copper reacts with sweat to form compounds that stain.
It is harmless and it washes off, but it is a signal rather than a cleaning problem: that part of the coating is gone and no cleaning method restores it.

Common questions
Can you clean gold plated jewelry with soap and water?
Briefly and rarely, dried immediately - but it is not recommended as a routine. Soap accelerates coating wear at friction points. A soft dry cloth after each wear is the better habit.
How do you restore gold plated jewelry?
You generally cannot. Once the coating has worn through, cleaning will not bring it back and re-plating usually costs more than the piece. Vermeil is the exception, since the sterling base is worth re-gilding.
Why is my gold plated jewelry turning silver?
The plating has worn through at a friction point and the base metal underneath is showing - usually at the clasp or the back of the neck first, because those are where abrasion concentrates.
