How to Clean Gold-Filled Jewelry

Gold-filled is finite. Every cleaning method that removes metal shortens the life of the piece, which rules out most of the jewelry-cleaning aisle.

The short answer

Wash gold-filled jewelry in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, work gently with a soft brush, rinse and dry completely with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive polishes, silver dips, baking soda or toothpaste: gold-filled is a bonded gold layer at 1/20th of the piece's weight, and anything that removes metal removes gold you cannot replace. Prevention does more than cleaning here.

Gold-filled chain, a soft cloth and a bowl of soapy water on a pale surface

Why gold-filled needs a different method from solid gold

Solid karat gold can be polished more or less indefinitely. It is gold all the way through, so removing a microscopic amount of surface metal costs you nothing you will ever notice. That is why jewelers polish gold rings without hesitation and why the cleaning aisle is full of compounds designed to do exactly that.

Gold-filled is not solid gold. It is a bonded layer of karat gold over a base core - normally a copper-zinc alloy, the mill standard being CDA 220 - and under the FTC Jewelry Guides that layer must be at least 1/20th of the item's total weight to carry the name. That is a real, substantial quantity of gold compared with plating, and it is still finite. Every abrasive pass removes a little of it, and the layer does not grow back.

So the governing principle for gold-filled care is simple and slightly counterintuitive: clean it as little as you can get away with, and prevent as much as possible. Soap and water, often. Compound, rarely. Abrasives, never. The material itself is explained in what gold-filled means, and whether it tarnishes at all is answered in does gold-filled tarnish.

What is actually on the piece when it looks dull

Nine times out of ten, a dull gold-filled chain is not tarnished. It is coated in a film of skin oil, body lotion, sunscreen, hairspray and soap residue, picked up over weeks and bonded by nothing more than time. That film scatters light, which is why the piece reads as dull rather than dirty. Soapy water removes all of it.

The other case is genuine discoloration, and it means something different: the gold layer has worn through somewhere, usually at a friction point, and the copper-bearing base is reacting with sweat and air. The tell is the location - the nape of the neck on a chain, the inside of a clasp, the underside of a ring - and the color, which is pinkish or greenish rather than gray. Cleaning will not fix that, because there is nothing wrong with the surface; the surface is gone. A polishing cloth will only take more gold off the edges of the worn patch.

Cleaning methods against gold-filled. 'Safe' means it does not remove metal from the gold layer.
MethodSafe on gold-filled?Why
Warm water + mild dish soapYes - the defaultRemoves film without touching the metal
Treated polishing cloth, light passesYes, sparinglyCarries a mild compound - effective, but it works by removing a trace of metal
Liquid jewelry cleaner with a brushYes, briefly and rinsedFormulated for gold and settings; keep soaks short and rinse fully
Baking soda, toothpaste, salt pastesNoAll abrasive. They scratch the gold layer and thin it permanently
Silver dip or tarnish-remover solutionNoFormulated to strip a sulfide layer off silver, not to meet a bonded gold surface or an exposed copper alloy
Ultrasonic cleanerOnly with careFine on plain solid metal; avoid it for glued stones, hollow beads and any piece whose gold is already worn through

Prevention does more than any cleaning method

Because the gold layer is finite, the highest-value habits are the ones that keep it off the list of things that need cleaning at all.

  • Last on, first off. Put jewelry on after lotion, perfume, sunscreen and hairspray, and take it off before the gym and the shower. This single habit removes most of what produces film.
  • Keep it out of pools and the sea. Chlorine and salt attack the copper in the base alloy wherever the gold layer is thin or broken, and a seam is always the thinnest point. Our full answer is can you shower with jewelry.
  • Store it dry and closed. Humidity is what starts the reaction at a seam. A closed box beats an open dish, and an anti-tarnish tab in the box helps if you also keep sterling in there.
  • Stop pieces rubbing. Abrasion, not tarnish, is what ends most gold-filled jewelry - and the most abrasive thing in a jewelry box is other jewelry. Separate compartments or pouches; see how to store jewelry.
  • Wipe it after wearing. Ten seconds with a soft cloth after a day's wear prevents most of the film that a wash would later have to remove.

Chains, earrings and the places film hides

Gold-filled chains collect film inside the links, where a cloth cannot reach - which is why a chain that has been wiped for months still looks dull in direct light. That is the case for the occasional soapy soak and a soft brush worked along the chain in one direction. Hold the chain taut rather than bunched so the brush reaches between links.

Earrings are the opposite problem. Studs and huggies see almost no abrasion, so their gold lasts the longest of anything in the material - but posts and hinges collect sebum and dead skin that a rinse will not move. A soft brush around the post and the hinge, then a thorough rinse and a full dry, is the whole routine. If the piece is a fresh-piercing earring, none of this applies: follow your piercer's aftercare, and read earrings for new piercings for why gold-filled is not the right material there in the first place.

How often, realistically

A soft-cloth wipe after wearing, a soapy wash every month or two for a daily piece, and a treated-cloth buff only when the wipe and the wash have stopped being enough. For a piece worn a few times a year, a wash before storing it is plenty. Gold-filled worn this way holds its color for 10 to 30 years, which is the material's whole argument - and an over-polished gold-filled chain reaches the short end of that range for no reason at all. The gold-cleaning routine for solid pieces is in how to clean gold jewelry, and the chain specifics are in how to clean gold chains.

Connoisseurs Extra Large Polishing Cloth, 14x14in - Impregnated polishing cloth, 14x14in. Two-layer cloths carry a mild polishing compound in the inner layer and a clean buffing surface outside.

1 · Best cloth for gold-filled

Connoisseurs Extra Large Polishing Cloth, 14x14in

The safest cleaning tool here and the one to reach for first. Ninety percent of jewelry cleaning should be this and nothing else.

What it is
Impregnated polishing cloth, 14x14in. Two-layer cloths carry a mild polishing compound in the inner layer and a clean buffing surface outside.
Realistic lifespan
Until it is black. A treated cloth is consumable - and it should never be washed, because washing removes the compound that makes it work.
  • 14x14in
  • impregnated
  • two-layer

What works

  • Safe on far more materials than any liquid or machine here
  • Regular light use prevents the tarnish that would otherwise need abrasive polish
  • Costs less than a cheap chain

What does not

  • Do not wash it - washing removes the compound and turns it into a rag
  • Cannot reach inside chain links or behind set stones

Skip it if: you need to clean pearls. Wipe pearls with a plain damp soft cloth and nothing else - no compound, no polish, no dip.

Best for routine upkeep on almost everything - silver, gold, gold-filled and steel. Score 8.5/10 from published specifications.

Weiman Fine Jewelry Cleaner Liquid with Brush - Liquid jewelry cleaner with an integrated brush, formulated for gold, platinum and precious stones.

2 · Best for settings and clasps

Weiman Fine Jewelry Cleaner Liquid with Brush

The brush is the difference. Dip cleaners loosen the film; a brush is what actually removes it from behind a setting.

What it is
Liquid jewelry cleaner with an integrated brush, formulated for gold, platinum and precious stones.
Realistic lifespan
Consumable. The brush outlasts the bottle.
  • with brush
  • gold + platinum
  • liquid

What works

  • The integrated brush reaches the underside of a setting, which is where the dullness actually lives
  • Formulated for precious metal rather than as a general household cleaner

What does not

  • Same restriction as every dip: not for pearls, opals, turquoise, coral or amber
  • Brushing plated pieces accelerates coating wear

Skip it if: your rings are plated. Brushing a plated ring is a fast way to wear through the coating at the high points.

Best for gold and platinum settings where dirt collects under the stone. Score 7.6/10 from published specifications.

Rosenthal Collection Anti-Tarnish Strips, 100 Tabs - Anti-tarnish tabs, 1x1in, 100 pieces. They work by absorbing the airborne sulfur compounds that cause silver tarnish, in a sealed space.

3 · Best prevention

Rosenthal Collection Anti-Tarnish Strips, 100 Tabs

The most effective thing on this page, because it prevents tarnish instead of removing it - and every removal costs you silver.

What it is
Anti-tarnish tabs, 1x1in, 100 pieces. They work by absorbing the airborne sulfur compounds that cause silver tarnish, in a sealed space.
Realistic lifespan
Each tab is typically effective for around six months in a closed container, then saturates. The 100-pack is a multi-year supply.
  • 100 tabs
  • 1x1in
  • ~6 month life each

What works

  • Prevention beats polish: every polish removes silver permanently, a strip removes nothing
  • A hundred tabs covers a whole box for years at a few cents each
  • Works in any sealed container - a box, a bag, a drawer

What does not

  • Only works in a CLOSED space; a tab in an open tray does nothing
  • They expire silently - mark the date you put them in

Skip it if: you own no sterling. Gold, steel and titanium do not tarnish, and these strips do nothing for them.

Best for anyone who owns sterling and is tired of polishing it. Score 8.6/10 from published specifications.

Common questions

Can you use jewelry cleaner on gold-filled jewelry?

A liquid cleaner formulated for gold is fine used briefly and rinsed thoroughly. What you must avoid is anything abrasive - pastes, powders, baking soda, toothpaste - and silver dips, which are designed to strip a sulfide layer off silver rather than to meet a bonded gold surface.

Why has my gold-filled jewelry gone dull?

Almost always a film of skin oil, lotion and soap residue rather than tarnish - soapy water removes it. If the discoloration is pinkish or greenish and sits at a friction point like the nape of a chain, the gold layer has worn through there and cleaning will not restore it.

Can gold-filled jewelry go in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Plain solid gold-filled metal generally tolerates it, but keep out anything with glued stones, hollow beads, pearls or a gold layer that has already worn through. For most gold-filled pieces a soapy soak and a soft brush does the same job with none of the risk.

Does gold-filled jewelry tarnish?

The gold layer itself does not. What tarnishes or discolors is the base metal underneath, once the gold has worn through at a friction point or where moisture sits in a seam. That is a wear issue rather than a cleaning one - see does gold-filled tarnish.

How do you clean a gold-filled chain that is dull inside the links?

Soak it for two or three minutes in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then hold the chain taut and work along it with an ultra-soft brush in one direction. Rinse until no suds remain and dry it completely before storing.
