The hardness ladder
Mohs hardness is an ordinal scale of scratch resistance, and the gaps between steps are not equal - the distance from 9 to 10 is far larger than from 2 to 3. That matters here.

The key line is the quartz one. Ordinary airborne dust contains quartz at Mohs 7. Every time you wipe a ring, dust drags across the stone. At Mohs 8-8.5 that leaves microscopic scratches which accumulate into a haze. At Mohs 9.25 and above it does not.
That is the entire mechanism, and it is why CZ clouds and moissanite does not.
CZ is not a scam, and it is not junk
Cubic zirconia is a real synthetic mineral with genuinely good optical properties. On day one, a well-cut CZ in a good setting looks excellent - which is precisely why it is so widely used, and why it is a perfectly reasonable purchase.
What nobody selling CZ mentions is the timeline. Two to five years of daily wear and the surface has softened. Not broken, not damaged - hazed, in the way frosted glass is hazed. It is the material behaving exactly as its hardness predicts.
Once you know that, CZ becomes an easy decision rather than a disappointing one. You are buying a few years of sparkle cheaply, and you can replace it cheaply too.
Cost per year, which is the real comparison
A pair of sterling-set CZ studs at around $15 lasting four years is roughly $4 a year. Lab-grown diamond studs in solid gold at a couple of hundred dollars, lasting indefinitely, are a few dollars a year over a lifetime - and rather more than that over five.
So CZ genuinely wins on short horizons and genuinely loses on long ones, which is a much more useful framing than “real versus fake”.

Does cubic zirconia get cloudy?
Yes, over roughly two to five years of daily wear. At Mohs 8-8.5 it is softer than the quartz in everyday dust, so microscopic scratches accumulate into a haze. It is normal for the material, not a defect.
Can a jeweler tell CZ from a diamond?
Immediately. CZ is much denser, has different dispersion and fails a thermal test. Distinguishing them is trivial for anyone with basic equipment, unlike lab-grown diamonds which require specialist testing.
Is cubic zirconia worth buying?
For studs, occasional-wear pieces and anything you are happy to replace, yes - it looks genuinely good and costs very little. For a ring you intend to wear daily for decades, moissanite or diamond is the better arithmetic.
How long does cubic zirconia last?
The stone does not break; it hazes. Roughly two to five years of daily wear before the change is obvious, longer in low-abrasion placements like stud earrings, shorter in rings.
