Cubic Zirconia vs Moissanite

The most useful comparison on this hub, because it is the one where paying more genuinely buys something you can measure.

The short answer

Moissanite at Mohs 9.25 stays bright essentially indefinitely. Cubic zirconia at Mohs 8-8.5 hazes after 2-5 years of daily wear because household dust contains quartz at Mohs 7. Moissanite costs more and lasts far longer.

The one number that decides it

Everyday dust contains quartz, which sits at Mohs 7. Anything softer than that gets scratched by ordinary handling; anything meaningfully harder does not.

Cubic zirconia is 8-8.5. That is above quartz, but not by much, and over years of wiping, washing and knocking, the surface accumulates microscopic scratches until it reads as slightly milky.

Moissanite is 9.25. That margin is enough that ordinary abrasion does not register at all. The stone stays as it was.

Cost per year, worked

Take CZ studs at roughly $15 replaced every four years. Over twenty years that is five pairs, so around $75, plus the nuisance of noticing they have gone dull and reordering.

Take moissanite studs at roughly $37, once. Over the same twenty years the moissanite is cheaper and there is nothing to notice or reorder.

Assumptions: daily wear, a four-year CZ replacement cycle, and no loss or damage to either. Change the horizon and the answer changes - over three years CZ is cheaper, and that is a completely reasonable purchase if three years is what you want.

Where CZ still wins

  • Fashion pieces you will tire of. Paying for a twenty-year stone in a two-year style is the actual waste.
  • Large statement sizes. A big moissanite is expensive and, in large sizes, obviously not a diamond. A big CZ is cheap and equally obvious. If the piece is openly costume, CZ is the sensible material.
  • Pieces at real risk of loss. Travel, festivals, anything you would rather not think about.
  • Children’s jewelry. Same logic.

The option nobody mentions

Created white sapphire is Mohs 9 - above the quartz threshold, so it does not haze - and costs about the same as CZ. Its weakness is lower fire: it looks softer and glassier than either CZ or moissanite, which some people prefer and some do not.

If durability matters more to you than maximum sparkle, it is the best-value hard stone on this site and almost nobody considers it.

Every pick in detail

Moissanite Stud Earrings, 2.0ct D Color Equivalent, GRA Certified - Moissanite (silicon carbide) in 925 sterling silver with an 18K white gold plated finish, sold with a GRA report. Moissanite is its own mineral, not a diamond simulant pretending otherwise.

1 · Best moissanite

Moissanite Stud Earrings, 2.0ct D Color Equivalent, GRA Certified

The stone that solves the CZ problem. Hard enough to stay bright, priced far below a diamond, and honest about being moissanite.

What it is
Moissanite (silicon carbide) in 925 sterling silver with an 18K white gold plated finish, sold with a GRA report. Moissanite is its own mineral, not a diamond simulant pretending otherwise.
Realistic lifespan
Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale against diamond's 10 and CZ's 8-8.5. In practice it holds its polish for decades where CZ clouds in a few years. The plated finish on the setting is the part that wears first.
  • 2.0ct
  • Mohs 9.25
  • GRA report

What works

  • Genuinely durable - moissanite does not go cloudy the way CZ does
  • Higher refractive index than diamond, so it throws more colored fire
  • Sold with a GRA report, which at least documents what the stone is

What does not

  • The extra fire reads as 'not a diamond' to anyone who looks closely - some people want that, some do not
  • GRA reports are not GIA reports; treat them as identification, not valuation
  • The setting's white finish is plated and will wear

Skip it if: you want something with resale value. Moissanite's secondary market is thin. Buy it to wear, not to sell.

Best for someone who wants stones that still sparkle in ten years. Score 8.4/10 from published specifications.

Amazon Essentials Platinum-Plated Sterling Silver CZ Stud Earrings - Cubic zirconia in platinum-plated 925 sterling silver. CZ is a synthetic stone in its own right - not a fake diamond, a different stone with different properties.

2 · Best CZ

Amazon Essentials Platinum-Plated Sterling Silver CZ Stud Earrings

The honest baseline CZ stud. Cheap, sparkly, and it will go slightly milky in a few years - which at this price is fine.

What it is
Cubic zirconia in platinum-plated 925 sterling silver. CZ is a synthetic stone in its own right - not a fake diamond, a different stone with different properties.
Realistic lifespan
CZ is Mohs 8-8.5 and clouds with surface abrasion over roughly 2-5 years of daily wear. That is CZ working as designed, not failing. The sterling setting is indefinite.
  • Mohs 8-8.5
  • 925 sterling
  • platinum plated

What works

  • Sterling settings rather than plated brass
  • Cheap enough that the 2-5 year stone life is genuinely acceptable value

What does not

  • CZ clouds. Every CZ clouds. Nobody selling CZ mentions this
  • Platinum plating on the setting wears at the same time

Skip it if: you want to buy studs once. Moissanite costs several times more and holds its surface for decades - that is the actual trade.

Best for everyday sparkle you replace every few years without thinking about it. Score 7.8/10 from published specifications.

SecreTalk Moissanite Pendant Necklace, 2ct - Moissanite on a white-gold-plated 925 sterling silver setting and chain. The stone is moissanite; the white color on the metal is plating over sterling.

3 · Best pendant

SecreTalk Moissanite Pendant Necklace, 2ct

A solitaire pendant where the expensive-looking part is the durable part and the cheap part is the finish. That is the right way round.

What it is
Moissanite on a white-gold-plated 925 sterling silver setting and chain. The stone is moissanite; the white color on the metal is plating over sterling.
Realistic lifespan
The moissanite holds its polish for decades. The white plating on the chain wears in 1-3 years, after which the sterling shows and tarnishes normally.
  • 2ct
  • Mohs 9.25
  • 925 setting

What works

  • The stone will outlast the chain, which is unusual at this price
  • Sterling base under the plating, so wear is cosmetic

What does not

  • Plated white finish will wear at the bail and clasp
  • Two carats is large enough that the size itself signals not-a-diamond

Skip it if: you are trying to pass it off as a diamond. It will not, to anyone who cares, and the site's whole point is that you should not have to.

Best for a solitaire look at a fraction of diamond money. Score 8.1/10 from published specifications.

Sterling Silver CZ Stud Earring Set, 3-6mm - 925 sterling silver settings with cubic zirconia stones, in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm.

4 · Best CZ value

Sterling Silver CZ Stud Earring Set, 3-6mm

A full size range of sterling-set CZ for $15. The stones will dull before the settings do, and that is normal for CZ, not a defect.

What it is
925 sterling silver settings with cubic zirconia stones, in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm.
Realistic lifespan
Sterling is indefinite with polishing. Cubic zirconia is the wear-limited part: it is softer than diamond and abrades to a cloudy surface over roughly 2-5 years of daily wear.
  • 3-6mm
  • 925 sterling
  • cubic zirconia

What works

  • Four sizes covers first holes, second holes and a dressier option
  • Sterling settings, not plated ones - the metal will outlast the stones

What does not

  • CZ clouds with wear. This is the material behaving normally, not failing
  • Butterfly backs; expect to lose one

Skip it if: you want stones that stay sharp for a decade. Moissanite holds its surface far longer and costs meaningfully more.

Best for everyday sparkle you will not mind replacing in a few years. Score 8.0/10 from published specifications.

Jewelili Sterling Silver Created White Sapphire Halo Ring - Lab-created white sapphire in 925 sterling silver. Created sapphire is chemically identical to mined sapphire - corundum - and is not a simulant.

5 · Best sleeper pick

Jewelili Sterling Silver Created White Sapphire Halo Ring

The overlooked middle option: a genuinely hard stone at CZ money. It sparkles less than CZ on day one and far more than CZ on year five.

What it is
Lab-created white sapphire in 925 sterling silver. Created sapphire is chemically identical to mined sapphire - corundum - and is not a simulant.
Realistic lifespan
Sapphire is Mohs 9, harder than CZ and just below moissanite. It resists scratching well but has lower brilliance, so it reads softer and greyer than a diamond rather than cloudy.
  • Mohs 9
  • created sapphire
  • 925 sterling

What works

  • Real corundum, chemically identical to mined sapphire
  • Mohs 9 means it stays clean-surfaced far longer than CZ
  • Under $13, which is remarkable for a stone this hard

What does not

  • Lower refractive index than CZ or moissanite - noticeably less fire
  • White sapphire can read slightly gray next to a diamond

Skip it if: you want maximum sparkle. Sapphire is the durable, understated option; moissanite is the bright one.

Common questions

Is moissanite harder than cubic zirconia?

Yes - Mohs 9.25 against 8-8.5. That gap sits on either side of quartz at Mohs 7, which is what everyday dust contains, and it is why one hazes and the other does not.

Can you tell CZ from moissanite by looking?

In larger stones, often - moissanite throws more colored fire, and CZ is noticeably heavier for its size. In small stones the two look very similar until CZ starts to haze a few years in.

Is moissanite worth the extra money over CZ?

For anything you intend to keep, yes - it is cheaper over a decade despite the higher sticker price. For a trend piece or a stone at real risk of loss, CZ is the rational choice.

Can cloudy CZ be polished back?

Not practically. The haze is thousands of microscopic scratches across the whole surface, and re-polishing a small set stone costs more than replacing it. Prevention - taking it off for abrasive tasks - is the only real remedy.
