What white sapphire is
Sapphire is corundum - aluminum oxide. Ruby is red corundum; sapphire is every other color, including colourless. Created white sapphire is chemically identical to mined sapphire, grown rather than dug, and it is a real gemstone rather than a simulant.
The FTC guides govern this naming directly: a created stone must be described in a way that makes its laboratory origin clear, which is why honest listings say “created” or “lab-created” white sapphire.

The trade, stated plainly
Sapphire is harder and will not haze. It is also considerably less brilliant: its refractive index is lower, so it bends and returns less light, and next to a CZ it looks softer, greyer and glassier.
Which you prefer is genuinely a matter of taste and not a matter of quality. Some people find CZ too bright and too obviously trying to be a diamond; the quieter, more watery look of white sapphire suits them better. Others find sapphire flat.
What is not a matter of taste is the timeline: in five years the sapphire will look how it looks today, and the CZ will not.

Is white sapphire a good diamond alternative?
As a durable stone, yes - Mohs 9 means it will not haze. As a diamond lookalike, less so: its lower refractive index gives it a softer, greyer look that reads differently from a diamond.
Does white sapphire get cloudy?
It does not haze from abrasion the way CZ does. What white sapphire does do is show surface dirt and skin oil readily, which looks like cloudiness and washes off with warm soapy water.
Is created white sapphire real sapphire?
Yes. It is corundum, chemically identical to mined sapphire, grown rather than mined. The FTC guides require the created origin to be disclosed but the stone itself is the same material.
Which is more expensive, CZ or white sapphire?
