Why rings are different
Every other piece of jewelry has friction points. A ring is entirely a friction point. The whole band contacts your other fingers, whatever you are holding, the inside of pockets, and soap several times a day.
A ring also gets deliberately struck against things - carrying bags, opening doors, gripping a gym bar. Nothing else you wear takes that.

The resizing trade-off
Steel and titanium are effectively permanent and effectively unresizable. Sterling is soft and fully repairable. That is the actual choice at this budget, and it depends on a question about you rather than about the ring:
- Is your ring size stable? If yes, steel or titanium is excellent value and will look identical in a decade.
- Might it change? Fingers change with weight, temperature, pregnancy and age. If that is likely, sterling can be resized for a modest fee and steel cannot be resized at all.
Buying a steel ring in the wrong size is the most common regret in this category, and it has no remedy.
Stones in rings
Two things fail on stone-set rings, in this order: the prongs, then the stone.
Sterling prongs are soft and bend, so a stone in a sterling setting needs occasional checking. And at Mohs 8-8.5, cubic zirconia hazes fastest on a hand of anywhere - this is the placement where the difference between CZ and moissanite shows up soonest.
For a ring worn daily under $100, created white sapphire at Mohs 9 is the quietly excellent choice: hard enough not to haze, and cheaper than moissanite.
Sizing yourself
Measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest, and in normal room temperature - cold hands measure smaller. Check that the ring passes the knuckle with slight resistance; the knuckle, not the base of the finger, is the constraint.
Wide bands fit tighter than narrow ones at the same nominal size, so a wide ring often needs a half size up.

Common questions
Do gold plated rings last?
Not long. A ring worn daily typically shows base metal within three to nine months, because the whole band is a friction point. It is the worst placement for any coating.
Can stainless steel rings be resized?
Essentially no. Steel is hard and difficult to solder, so almost no jeweler will resize one. Buy the correct size first time, or choose sterling silver, which any jeweler can resize.
What is the best cheap ring material?
Stainless steel for indestructibility, sterling silver if you might need it resized or engraved, titanium if your skin reacts. All three are solid metals with nothing to wear through.
Why does my ring turn my finger green?
Copper in the base metal - brass, or plating worn through to brass - reacting with sweat and soap. Hands provide plenty of both. It washes off, and solid steel, sterling or titanium prevents it entirely.
