Lab-grown diamonds cost a fraction of mined stones with the same grading, and the gap has widened as production capacity grew. We do not quote a fixed figure here because the market moves too fast for a typed number to stay honest - the live prices in the table above are the real answer.

Why we will not print a price per carat
Every guide that quotes a fixed dollar-per-carat figure is out of date within months, and lab-grown has moved faster than almost any other jewelry category in the last decade. A number typed into this page in September would be misleading by the spring, and a misleading number is worse than no number.
What we can give you is the shape of the market and the live prices on the specific pieces above, pulled from Amazon and stamped with the date they were checked.
Why the price keeps falling
Lab-grown diamonds are manufactured, primarily by chemical vapor deposition or high-pressure high-temperature methods. Manufacturing has a cost curve: as capacity is added and processes improve, unit costs fall. That is what has happened, at scale, and it is a normal industrial dynamic rather than anything unusual to diamonds.
Mined diamonds have a different economics - supply is constrained by geology and by the companies controlling it - which is why the two price curves have separated so far.

Where the savings are best spent
Three places, in order of how much difference they make:
- The setting metal. Solid gold or platinum prongs hold stones. Sterling prongs bend, and a lost stone costs far more than the setting saved. This is the single best use of lab-grown savings.
- Cut quality. Cut affects how a stone looks more than carat does. A well-cut smaller stone outperforms a poorly-cut larger one in every light.
- Not spending it. Genuinely. If lab-grown gets you the ring you wanted for half of what you budgeted, the other half does not have to become more stone.
Grading and reports
Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs as mined stones, by the same laboratories. A report from a recognized lab tells you what you are buying. Reports from unfamiliar labs vary in rigour, and a report is identification rather than valuation in any case.
For a small stone in a marketplace listing, a report often does not exist at all - which is fine at that price point, provided the listing is honest that the stone is lab-grown and you are not paying mined-stone money for it.

How much cheaper are lab grown diamonds?
Substantially, and the gap has widened over time. We deliberately do not print a percentage, because the number moves fast enough that anything typed here would be stale within months. Compare live listings for the same specs.
Will lab grown diamonds keep getting cheaper?
We cannot forecast that and will not pretend to. What is observable is that prices have fallen as capacity has grown, which is the normal path for a manufactured good.
Can you insure a lab grown diamond?
Yes, at replacement cost like any other jewelry. Because replacement cost is lower, so is the premium - a small practical advantage nobody mentions.
Is a cheap lab grown diamond lower quality?
Not necessarily. Price varies with the 4Cs exactly as it does for mined stones. A cheap lab-grown stone is usually smaller, more included or less well cut - the same reasons a mined stone would be cheap.
