Two manufactured stones, one important difference
Both are made rather than mined, so neither carries a mining story. Both are hard enough to wear indefinitely. The difference is identity: a lab-grown diamond is a diamond, chemically and optically. Moissanite is a different mineral that looks similar.
For some buyers that distinction is the whole decision, and that is a legitimate thing to care about. For others it is irrelevant, and that is equally legitimate.

The price gap has changed the answer
Moissanite’s original pitch was “almost a diamond, for a tenth of the price”. As lab-grown diamond prices have fallen, that gap has narrowed considerably, and in some sizes the decision is now genuinely close.

How to choose
- You want it to be a diamond: lab-grown. That is a real preference and it deserves a straight answer rather than a lecture.
- You want maximum sparkle per dollar: moissanite, comfortably. The extra fire is a genuine visual advantage if you like it.
- You want the largest stone your budget allows: moissanite, still.
- You want it to be discreet: lab-grown, or a smaller moissanite. Large moissanites are the ones people notice.
- You care about resale: neither, honestly. Mined diamonds are the only option here with a functioning secondary market, and even that is well below retail.

Is moissanite or lab diamond better?
Neither is better in the abstract. Lab-grown is an actual diamond with diamond’s optics; moissanite is cheaper with more fire. Both are hard enough to wear forever, so the decision is about identity and appearance rather than durability.
Which sparkles more, moissanite or diamond?
Moissanite throws considerably more colored fire - its dispersion is roughly two and a half times a diamond’s. Whether “more” means “better” is a matter of taste.
Are lab diamonds worth more than moissanite?
They cost more and they resell slightly better, though both secondary markets are weak. If resale is the criterion, mined diamonds are the only meaningful option and even they are well below retail.
Will moissanite pass a diamond tester?
Basic thermal testers often read moissanite as diamond, because both conduct heat well. Modern combination testers distinguish them by electrical conductivity. This is a reason not to rely on a cheap tester, not a reason to buy or avoid either stone.
