What moissanite is
Silicon carbide - a distinct mineral, not a diamond simulant pretending to be something else. It occurs naturally in tiny quantities in meteorites and is manufactured for jewelry. It has its own optical properties and, importantly, its own name: a seller who calls it moissanite is being straightforward.

The fire is the actual difference
Moissanite’s dispersion - its tendency to split white light into spectral colors - is roughly two and a half times a diamond’s. In practice that means a moissanite throws noticeably more rainbow flashes, especially in direct sunlight and in larger sizes.
Whether that is good depends on you. Some people specifically prefer it and buy moissanite for the look rather than the price. Others find it reads as artificial. It is the one property where an experienced eye can often tell the difference across a table, and it is more noticeable the bigger the stone gets.
If discretion matters to you, a smaller moissanite is far less obvious than a large one - which is a useful and rarely-mentioned fact.
Hardness, in practical terms
Mohs 9.25 means moissanite resists everything in ordinary life. Household dust contains quartz at Mohs 7, which is what abrades cubic zirconia at Mohs 8-8.5 over a few years. Moissanite is comfortably above that threshold and does not cloud.
So the practical durability difference between moissanite and diamond is close to zero for a worn piece. Both will look the same in twenty years. This is where moissanite genuinely separates itself from CZ, and the distinction is worth understanding rather than lumping all “diamond alternatives” together.
The grading language question
Moissanite is routinely sold with diamond grading terms - “D color”, “VVS1” - and reports from labs that specialize in it. This is industry convention rather than a like-for-like grade: the diamond grading scale was built for diamonds, and applying it to a different mineral is an analogy.
It is not dishonest, but treat such a report as identification - confirming the stone is moissanite and roughly what quality tier it sits in - rather than as a valuation or as equivalent to a GIA diamond report.
No snobbery, in either direction
Moissanite is not a lesser person’s diamond and a diamond is not a mug’s moissanite. They are different stones with different optical signatures at very different prices, and both are durable enough to last a lifetime.
The only bad outcome here is buying one while believing it is the other. Everything else is preference, and preference is allowed.

Common questions
Can people tell moissanite from a diamond?
Often, in larger sizes and in bright light, because moissanite throws considerably more colored fire. In smaller stones and ordinary indoor light, usually not. It is the fire, not the clarity or color, that gives it away.
Does moissanite get cloudy over time?
No. At Mohs 9.25 it resists the everyday abrasion that clouds cubic zirconia. What looks like cloudiness on any stone is almost always a film of soap and skin oil, which washes off with warm water and a soft brush.
Is moissanite worth anything?
Very little on resale - the secondary market is essentially nonexistent. Buy it to wear. The same is broadly true of most jewelry, and increasingly of lab-grown diamonds too.
Is moissanite a fake diamond?
No. It is a distinct mineral - silicon carbide - with its own name and its own properties. A fake would be something pretending to be a diamond. Moissanite sold as moissanite is exactly what it says it is.
