The rhodium plating nobody mentions
White gold is not naturally white. It is yellow gold alloyed with white metals - palladium, silver, nickel - which lightens it to a warm grayish tone. To get the bright white finish people actually want, virtually all white gold jewelry is plated with rhodium, a platinum-group metal.
Rhodium plating wears. On a ring worn daily it typically needs redoing every one to three years; on a pendant, far less often. When it wears, the piece looks slightly yellow or dull rather than damaged, and owners often assume the gold has tarnished. It has not - the plating has thinned.
Re-plating is a routine jeweler service, but it is a recurring cost that nobody mentions at the point of sale, and over ten years it is not trivial.

When sterling is genuinely enough
For a plain chain, a pendant or earrings, sterling gives you the same white-metal look for a fraction of the money, and the maintenance is something you do yourself with a cloth rather than something you pay a jeweler for.
The place sterling struggles is holding valuable stones. Sterling is soft, so prongs bend and stones can be lost. If the stone is worth more than the setting, the setting should not be sterling.
When white gold earns the money
- Anything holding a significant stone. Harder metal, better prong retention, less risk of the expensive part falling out.
- Daily rings. Sterling rings deform noticeably over years of daily wear; gold does not.
- Pieces intended to last generations. Gold has a material floor under its value that silver only weakly has.
The middle option people forget
Rhodium- or platinum-plated sterling gets you sterling’s substance with a bright white, tarnish-resistant surface for a couple of years. When the plating goes you still own the silver, so the failure mode is benign. For a tennis bracelet or a dressier piece worn occasionally, this is often the sensible buy and almost nobody considers it.

Common questions
Does white gold turn yellow?
It appears to, when the rhodium plating wears and the naturally warmer alloy underneath shows through. The gold has not changed - the surface has. Re-plating restores it.
Can you tell sterling silver from white gold by looking?
Freshly rhodium-plated white gold is brighter and cooler than polished sterling, but the difference is subtle and disappears as sterling tarnishes or rhodium wears. Weight is a better clue - gold is noticeably denser.
Is white gold better for sensitive skin than sterling?
Not necessarily. Some white gold alloys use nickel to achieve the white color, which is the most common jewelry allergen. Sterling is usually alloyed with copper. If skin is the concern, ask what the white gold is alloyed with, or choose platinum or titanium.
